The pain in his leg lingered longer than an echo ever had. He supposed it made sense. No doubt there was new pain every time Buckley so much as shifted.
He tried his best to hide it, especially at work, but for some reason he found it harder to hide a limp from an echo than if it was his own pain. It got bad enough that he wasn't even surprised when Captain Harris pulled him into his office near the end of a shift. He expected authoritative concern and obligatory offers of support. Instead, he got an ultimatum.
"You're grounded, Kinard."
Tommy couldn't believe was he was hearing. "Are you serious?"
"Until you meet your soulmate and the echoes lessen, you're not allowed in a chopper. Fitzsimmons admitted you've been asking for low-level tranqs at the end of nearly every shift."
"As is allowed, sir," Tommy protested.
"Yes. But that's intended as a stopgap, as you well know. Not as a substitute for talking to your soulmate because you're too chickenshit to go meet them."
"Sir," Tommy started to protest, but at a glare from his captain, he fell silent.
"You're dismissed, Kinard."
Tommy nodded tightly, then left.
