My favorite bugs are rolly pollies and also orchid mantises!!!

hi hi, i'm more than happy to talk about buggies to you!! i love, love, love bugs - i was always the kid who found insects during break and tried showing them off to everyone (even the 'ugly' or 'gross' bugs no one liked, i thought they were precious)

since you love roly polies, heres a fact or two about them!:

fascinatingly enough, despite being named pill bugs, roly polies are actually crustaceans and not insects! they're more closely related to shrimp, crabs and lobsters then bugs!

they can ingest heavy metals such as lead, zinc, copper and cadmium that are present in soil, though it's not a primary food source for them!

they carry their babies in a pouch, called the marsupium! the eggs will develop in the pouch for two to three months and after hatching, they will even stay in the pouch for three or four days afterwards!

along with some orchid mantis facts:

orchid mantis have learnt to change colours, much like a chameleon - though their range is much more muted and small, being light white and pinks to brown!

orchid mantis' are not the only type of flower mantis, others include: the small devils flower mantis and the wandering violin mantis!

they're one of the top insect predators - they'll even eat bigger animals such as frogs, rodents and birds!!

despite being named the orchid mantis, they don't specifically resemble any orchids, more so a general flower aesthetic to attract prey according to behavioral ecologist james o’hanlon who said, “there no compelling evidence to suggest that orchid mantises mimic a specific orchid, or any other specific flower.”!

and some general bug facts, of course <3:

male giraffe weevils will use their long necks to fight eachother, just like their namesake!

bugs can in fact fart, though not all bugs have this function! it's particularly seen in bugs with a lot of gut bacteria, such as roaches and termites!

sometimes bumblebees will bite plants to make them bloom earlier - even up to a month early!! this usually happens during the early spring when pollen may be limited!

some stone flies will do push-ups in an attempt to impress potential mates!

Facts ! ( bees for today! 🐝)

Bees are flying insects known for pollinating flowers and producing honey (in the case of honeybees).

They are crucial for ecosystems and agriculture—around 1/3 of all food depends on pollination.

Hairy bodies help trap pollen.

They have compound eyes and strong mandibles or proboscises for feeding.

Bees can see ultraviolet light, which helps them find nectar-rich flowers.

Honeybees perform a "waggle dance" to tell hive mates where to find food.

Hello buggies!

A small update on my life and living situation: As of right now, we have a small (extremely dirty and shabby) apartment. It isn't much, but it isn't a box under a bridge, and once we move in we can make it home. It's a lot less than what I was used to before the whole thing happened, but nothing I've never experienced. We're in all effects homeless still, though, and we have to leave my cat with a friend for a month or so until we can afford pet deposit. Update on this blog: I will be working on projects for myself for now. Headers, dividers, decor for myself, my own favorite animals, that kind of thing. I love you guys but taking requests is starting to become really overwhelming, and I need to take a break and remind myself that doing this is supposed to be fun for me, not stressful! I'll be doing requests still as I get the motivation, but they'll likely be out of order, and they'll take a pretty long time to complete. But I'm going to try some new things with how I make the posts, and hopefully make them even cooler and do even more research into them. So feel free to use this post as a memo board for what you guys want to see!

Would you like to see outfits again? Agere gear pertaining to those animals? What about a few stuffies of them? Let me know!

Also: Huge thanks to @oftlunarialmoon. I LOVE GETTING TO TALK ABOUT BUGS MMMMM MY LITTLE CRITTERS!!

manifesting a caregiver who will take me to the zoo and the museum to see the bug sections and will tell me hundreds of facts about them (doesn't matter if i already know them or not!! it's the though that counts)!!

hii! im trying to get over my phobia of bugs, so i decided i would try and see the good side of them :]

if its okay, could you share with me some of your favourite facts about bugs, and/or some cool images of bugs? no pressure, though! ^_^

oh, i'm so happy and proud of you anon! as a very avid bug lover, i always love hearing people try to be more open to them, even just slightly!!

a few fun facts:

a single dung beetle can move about 1141 times it's own weight! it's like if a human pulled SIX double decker buses, all on their own!

male stoneflies are like, the gym guy of the bug world - sometimes they'll do pushups as a way to impress a potential mate!

male giraffe weevils use their looong necks to fight eachother, much like actual giraffes!

some tarantulas have been found to essentially keep frogs as pets! the spider will offer safety and protection to frogs while a frog will eat any insects that may try and attack the spiders eggs!! (this habit has also been seen in some other spider species too!)

rosy maple moth (dryocampa rubicunda), also known as the great silk moth! this species is a small north american moth. it's recently surged in popularity due to it's adorable colours and tiny size, even having plushies made after it!

humming bird hawk moth (macroglossum stellatarum) is named for it's resemblance to the humming bird as they feed on the nectar of tube shaped flowers using their long proboscis while staying in the air. this species is found across temperate areas of eurasia such as portugal, japan and spain!

cecropia moth (hyalophora cecropia), aka a giant silk moth is the largest native moth found in north america! their wing can even span up to five-seven inches (13-18 centimeters) wide!

the peacock spider (maratus volans) is a jumping spider native to australia (my country!!) with only one species residing in china! much like the bird they're named after, peacock spiders will display their bright feathers as a mating technique, paired with a dance! it is widely believed that females will kill a male if they find their dance unsatisfactory but this is fortunately, for the men, untrue! she will instead ignore him or move her abdomen side to side to display her disinterest. the maratus sarahae (first image) is one of the largest species! image two is a maratus azureus!

sabertooth longhorn beetle (macrodontia cervicornis) are some of the largest beetles in the world! it spends most of it's life in a larval stage which can last up to 10 years!! after which it will only live a few more months in which it will reproduce. sabertooth larvae are planted under the bark of dead or dying softwood trees as they will burrowing inside it!

hi your intro says harnessed tiger moths are one of your favorite bugs so i thought I'd show you photos I took of them! I've seen 3 so far! I haven't ID'd the one in the first photo yet but I'm guessing it's also a harnessed.
