hi hello idk if you're a short fiction liker but top 5 short stories? im always on the hunt for more

i am so very much a short fiction liker!!!!! this is a random assortment of what i remember and what i can find links to, culled from my bookmarks and bookshelves... can't say they're "top" but they are wellbeloved by me

"The Last Mountain" by pervocracy

"An astronomical event is slowly splitting the world in half. A small crew of mountain climbers decides to make the most of the time they have left." an eerily apocalyptic, tragic future story

"The Pill" by Meg Elison (part 1, part 2)

a dystopian weight-loss future story where anyone can take a pill to become skinny, at the minor risk of 10% odds of death. a tongue-in-cheek fatphobic and bitter fat liberation story, and oddly prescient of "ozempic face"

"Rummins" by Roald Dahl (anthologized in The Best of Roald Dahl)

a horribly atmospheric "country story" from our favorite midcentury misogynist. all of the "claud's dog" stories are great but this one sticks in the mind and rots there

"Pnin Gives A Party" by Vladimir Nabokov

a chapter of Pnin, maybe my favorite novel of his, published separately with slight edits in the New Yorker two years before the novel's publication. maybe it's cheating as a rec but hopefully this chapter will tempt the reader into reading the whole book. winsome, tragic, farcical, heartbreaking, hysterically funny

"The Erl-King" by Angela Carter (from her collection The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories)

in glancing thru this collection apparently the entire ambition of my entire prose style was lifted from miz carter without my realizing it? this rec may be a hoary classic on tumblr but for well-deserved reason. a horror/love/suffering/beauty/wild wood retelling of folklore

and one extra, "The Fillyjonk Who Believed in Disasters" by Tove Jansson

an example epitomizing jansson's melancholy, wonderful prose style and compassionate yet slyly funny character writing. this story is about a little creature beset by anxiety and terror, boxed in by her confining life and desperate to protect it from all manner of disasters, until something unexpected happens

(btw in compiling this list i took out my 4 years of an old favorite anthology series, best american nonrequired reading, and in the 2003 edition found TWO great literary fakers... jt leroy and nasdijj... oh 2003 how innocent we were)

The popularity and place of honor as "most kudos'd fic in the tma tag" of Yesterday is Here is a fact that has never ceased to surprise, delight, and in many ways terrify me lol. On the one hand I'm so so flattered that people like it so much, and it's a huge deal to me to have reached such a level of recognition in a fandom that's been at the center of my life for so many years, but on the other... that's so many people dude. Like. If a kudos is a high five then my hand is falling off.

I associate you so strongly with fruit it's kind of impossible to get around. However, I don't think of strawberry as having a scent so I think cherry would work? But that means the cherry needs to be balanced out...

I really enjoyed Cherry de Carmen from Alexandria (which is apparently a dupe of Creed's Carmina) but it's very aggressive. Instead of a very woody-forward cherry, maybe an herbal cherry...

This one sounds interesting, though fuck that price point, get a dupe.
