Red Panda Ailurus fulgens
A 1982 study examining skull shape placed the red panda in its own family Ailuridae, related to bears. However, further genetic studies have placed the red panda within the clade Musteloidea, which also includes racoons, mustelids, and skunks. It feeds mainly on bamboo shoots and leaves, but also on fruits and blossoms. Community-based conservation programmes have been initiated in Nepal, Bhutan and northeastern India; in China, it benefits from nature conservation projects.
