Note: She worked as a funeral director in Detroit and was fired for being transgender. Based on her court case, in a historic 2020 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the 1964 Civil Rights Act protects gay, lesbian, and transgender employees from discrimination based on sex.

Aimee Stephens, a trans woman currently at the center of an historic civil rights SCOTUS case, passed away on Tuesday. Her case concerns whether trans and gender non-conforming people are covered by a federal anti-discrimination law that bans job discrimination on the basis of sex.

Stephens worked as a funeral director for nearly 6 years. After telling her employer in 2013 that she was transitioning, Stephens was fired. The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Stephens’ employer unlawfully fired her because she’s transgender. Her employer then brought the case to the Supreme Court. It's the first case regarding the civil rights of trans people to be heard by the Supreme Court. A verdict on the case is expected imminently.

Stephens died on May 12 at her home in Detroit. She had kidney disease for several years. A GoFundMe was set up last week to raise money for her end-of-life costs. [CNN]

This is Aimee Stephens. In 2013, she was fired for being trans. She, alongside Don Zarda, and Gerald Bostock filed a discrimination lawsuit against their employers. Their case made its way to the Supreme Court. In the middle of the lawsuit, Aimee passed away at age 59. But today, the Supreme Court ruled in her favor. As of today, discrimination against LGBTQ people is illegal.

Although Aimee didn’t live to see the ruling, her story and struggle are the reason why we can celebrate today’s victory. I especially hope all the queer terfs recognize who got us here.

Finally some good news today: SCOTUS makes the morally and legally right decision regarding LGBTQ civil rights. Not to steal from Jane Austen but can we designate this a month to (Celebrate) Pride & (Fuck) Prejudice? So much work to be done.

This the Supreme Court document essentially detailing all the reasons why employment protections for transgender and gender nonconforming individuals should not be legalized. Also, there are “authorities” being used in defense of our transphobic government to not legalize protections.

Please take a look at these “authorities” and their work. Write to them. Call them. Show them that their work is being used to commit transphobia.
