I remember being drawn to this book when it was first released c.2011, because of the gorgeous cover & its premise - a modern day retelling of the myth of Hades & Persephone. Unfortunately, Aimee Carter's The Goddess Test put me off the whole subgenre of modern day retellings of ancient myths for a very, very long time. The myth of Hades's abduction of Kore/Persephone/Proserpine is one of my favourite Greek myths. It is also clearly a favourite of many, if the sheer number of retellings is any indication: the goodreads list "Hades and Persephone" has 172 titles by various authors & I am fairly certain that doing a google search for Hades & Persephone will bring up as many hits for the hugely popular webcomic Lore Olympus as iterations of the myth itself. It seems that the "marriage" of Hades & Persephone continues to inspire many to this day. In this retelling, the protagonist Kate's mother is dying & everything seems hopeless till she sees Henry, who claims to be the god of the dead, resurrect a dead girl. If she is to save her mother, Kate must now participate in seven tests that will determine if she is capable of becoming a goddess & rule the underworld as Henry's consort. It wasn't so much the very quotidian renaming of the gods & goddesses (Hades as Henry, Kore as Kate) that put me off this book, or the cringe-inducing high school setting of the plot, or the hackneyed dialogues, or even the odd co-mingling of late medieval Christian & ancient Greek myth (the seven tests based on the seven deadly sins), but ultimately the lack of a strong, believable story. The story is incredibly low-stakes with the plot taking convenient outs to favour the protagonist repeatedly. The characters are weakly drawn & the plot itself, despite its potential, suffers at the hand of weak & unadventurous storytelling. Needless to say, I did not continue with the series. 2/5 🌟 & full review on #goodreads (link in bio) #thegoddesstest #aimeecarter #hadesandpersephone #loreolympus #greekgods #retellings #bookstagram #bookreview #bookcover #bookcoverdesign #prettybooks #gorgeousbookcovers #gothaesthetic #goth #twostars #mythretelling #greekmythologybooks #yafantasy #yaromance https://www.instagram.com/p/CRDDc-IgjyG/?utm_medium=tumblr
✨Whatever obstacles you face, remember you can get through anything if you want to badly enough.✨ ° ° This quote is perfect for today's post!😅 ° Basically, yesterday I had a major breakdown because I realized that some things would not go as planned, the problem is I hate to not have everything under control. 😣 ° I think I managed to find a good solution, not the best but good enough for me, and maybe I can calm down a little bit. 😶 ° To escape all of this mess, I decided to start "Dark Age" by Pierce Brown, because my addiction to his books is still strong. 😂 ° I truly hope that your weekend is better than mine. 💕 ° ° #aimeecarter #thegoddesstestseries #breakdown #bookstagramfeature #lovetoread #readingtime #whattoread #bookworld #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookishgirl #bookcommunity #booklife #booknerd #igreads #lovetoread #readingaddict #bibliophile #bookrecommendation https://www.instagram.com/p/B1TzjAPIX1A/?igshid=su0q712qvlgr
For this #bookoftheweek I chose wanna of my favorite series which was a huge inspiration to me when I wrote The Veiled Threat. The Goddess Test by Aimee Carter is my choice for #bookoftheweek • • Every girl who had taken the test has died. Now it's Kate's turn. It's always been just Kate and her mom—and her mother is dying. Her last wish? To move back to her childhood home. So Kate's going to start at a new school with no friends, no other family and the fear that her mother won't live past the fall. Then she meets Henry. Dark. Tortured. And mesmerizing. He claims to be Hades, god of the Underworld—and if she accepts his bargain, he'll keep her mother alive while Kate tries to pass seven tests. Kate is sure he's crazy—until she sees him bring a girl back from the dead. Now saving her mother seems crazily possible. If she succeeds, she'll become Henry's future bride and a goddess. If she fails... • • I fell completely in love with this story when I read it. It was a young adult series that actually had some awesome adult themes and the new take on mythology that was a breath of fresh air. Kate is a great protagonist and the way Carter crafts the world of the Gods is both innovative, and imaginative. One of the best mythological fantasy reads I personally have ever read! And Henry and James had me constantly swooning with each book! Have you read The Goddess Test? Who’s your favorite Greek god? #authorsophiamenesini #thegoddesstestseries #aimeecarter #theveiledthreat #theveiledduchessseries #mythologyfantasybooks #bookoftheweek (at Martinez, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0orUewATS1/?igshid=ajjhp7vugdnx
