Then I drew the one with the raccoon stuffy, and I knew that was him. 😊 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ You can also see the mime character was there from the beginning. I do not know why I have a mime in my story. I wanted to create a book for children that would appeal to adults. Something to be loved from cradle to the grave, then passed on to the next generation. Trade-publishers insist on books that are designed for a specific age bracket.📚⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2. I wanted the readers to understand the story even if they did not speak a word of English and could not read. This required extensive illustration making my book 58 pages long. Trade-publishers accept picture-books of 24 or 32 pages in length. 😶 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 3. I wanted my book to be secretly educational without readers being aware that they were reading a “boring” educational book. Trade-publishers have a specific format for educational books. 😇 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 4. I wanted to have an online component that would allow readers to check answers to puzzles, learn more about animals, download artwork and coloring pages, engage. I was a nobody and that takes money. ✍🏻 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 5. I want this book to raise funds for conservation efforts. With Trade-publishing there would not be enough money left over after everyone is paid. (I miscalculated on this, too. I was not expecting such high consignment costs for self-publishers. I have not made back my investment, yet. But I hope I can if the word gets out, and more people buy the Kindle copy.) 🐼 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 6. I wanted this book to be of the highest quality, because I need it to take a beating and last generations. Quality costs money and I was a nobody. 💰 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🤔 How do you feel about self-publishing?
