She can’t wait to find a community where she can be herself—and, she hopes, admit her crush on Laura Dern to kids who will understand. Thirteen-year-old Kai (e/em/eir) is not as excited. E just wants to hang out with eir best friend and eir parkour team. For a while every book I tried to read with a trans or nonbinary protagonist would just throw a surprise sexual assault or transphobic attack in at the end and, yes, I know those things happen to trans and nonbinary people, but that’s not all there is to them! Also, throwing in sudden sexual violence without any regard to the plot or the tone of the book is the best way to make me hate your book.
Fortunately, since then I have found some that don’t include surprise violence. Ana on the Edge by A.J. Sass is a good one!
Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas is also good. There is some violence towards the end, but it is not gender based and it makes sense with the plot/tone.
I haven’t finished something other than a children’s book in a bit now, so I’m getting excited the closer I get to the end of this book. I want to see Shai open themselves up to change and come to terms with the fact that not ever plan is perfect. I can’t wait to see where they go.
