Jim Davidson & His A.B.C. Dance Orchestra

Jim Davidson was a Sydney drummer and band leader who played and lead dance bands in the nineteen-twenties and thirties, and directed the AIF military band staging shows for Australia’s troops in the Middle East and the South-West Pacific Area.

Davidson’s ten piece band gave a concert in August 1932 at Hillier’s Cafe in Sydney which is thought to be one of the first actual jazz concerts in Australia. This concert led to a booking at the Palais Royal – the premier dance hall in Sydney of the time. This proved to be one of the most successful seasons at the Palais Royal, attendance being in the thousands even on week nights. One night brought a record crowd of 5,500.

During a six month season in 1933 with his orchestra in Melbourne, at St Kilda’s Palais de Danse, Davidson signed a contract with the Australian Broadcasting Commission. He enlarged his orchestra and performed over the national network to all States. Broadcasting from Sydney from 1936, Jim Davidson’s ABC Dance Band, with the trumpeter Jim Gussey, the vocalist Alice Smith and the trombonist and arranger George Trevare, became the most popular in the country. It presented dance programs on Friday and Saturday evenings and played for other ABC shows including `Out of the Bag’ and `A.B.C. Parade’.

Today’s track is Davidson’s up tempo version of Hang Your Heart on a Hickory Limb, originally sung by Bing Crosby in the movie East Side of Heaven.
