The trees

Right before nightfall

Comes the sad song

Of settled trees

Crying not to lose the ground

Where they arose: “It’s our host

And our home –

Can you not show

Even the slightest compassion

For the depths of our roots

So deeply planted, dearly sown?”

But all lyrics are lost to man’s ears

As twisting groans, and

Twilit cheers of submission

Given not a second’s doubt
