Second favourite moment so far is Mr. Hurst teaching Mary about horses:

That was genuinely fun and sweet. Everything else has been pretty meh.

I wish they'd done more of these genuine connection moments. So often it just felt like Mary was detached and so many people were her cheerleader for no good reason.

Finished The Sword and the Brocade! Some general notes:

I loved it. The schemes were always fun and surprisingly solved. I liked that both of the leads were intelligent and usually ahead of the other people. Competence!

It was mostly slice of life with a very very slow murder investigation and revenge plot

Towards the end, Shiyi did seem a little too saintly, like helping her awful sister who is pitiful but is also just consistently cruel to her. Though it was fun that she saved her sister with The Power of Spite.

I didn't mind the stabbing and Shiyi being tricked by all the evidence that her husband might have killed her mom, because it never seemed like she totally believed it, but what I was questioning is when it's pretty clear she likes and trusts her husband, why she didn't ask him for help. Especially since her murder investigation was sooo slow.

It was also kind of unrealistic how long they waited to have sex, but whatever, Cdrama things.

The costumes were BEAUTIFUL

I really liked the male lead just being really unsuited for polygamy, or maybe for having a family in general. Like he's very happy with Shiyi but I think he could also totally thrive as a single person with an intensive job.

Now I can watch/read something else because I've been obsessed!

Henry’s eyes dart over to him but he doesn’t move his head. “Are sinful thoughts something I should confess to you?”

2/ communion wine / decadence / vienna

“Listen,” Hans says, leaning back against the edge of the tub. “Drinking wine in the bath. If you think about it, it’s a little profane, isn’t it?”

3/ vigil fast / penance / sofia

“Everything you do makes me want to be there in your bed with you. This is no ordinary fast.” Hans crosses himself, then presses his palm against his chest, feeling the heavy beat of his heart there. “It’s a test.”

Hans throws another seashell. It lands just short of the water, on the wet sand of a receding wave. “What do you imagine? When you think of me with her?”

5/ open tomb of a desert saint / exposure / alexandria

“It’s like building a tolerance. I am different from how I was before I met you. This Henry is more open to people and feelings. I think that’s because of you. Because I love you.”

6/ dust from the holy sepulcher / absolution / jerusalem

“By your side no matter what. If that makes your marriage difficult, I will stay with you regardless. If you try to send me away, I will stay. Can you absolve me of your future frustration with me? Will you forgive me when I disobey any order you give me to leave?”
