Follets are one of the most well-known characters in Catalan folklore. They are very small men who wear a red barretina (traditional Catalan hat) or a pointy hat and live for centuries.
They are playful and like to play jokes on humans. For example, at night they make noises at the door locks, they lift tiles, braid the tails of animals, pull the bed’s blanket, and untidy everything in a house.
However, they are also very tidy, so often they put things back to their place after having played with them. Sometimes they even sneak in people’s houses with the only purpose of tidying it up.
The illustration above was made by Anna Ribot-Urbita for a calendar of Catalan mythology. Since folklore often changes slightly in each area, this illustration represents especifically follets as they are explained in Almudaina (Valencian Country). In that area, they say that follets come in through the chimneys when everybody is sleeping to tidy and clean their houses. People from the area also say that follets are always dressed in old rags, but that they are offended if you give them new clothes because it makes them feel like you’re treating them as your servants, so if you give them new clothes they will stop working and they will only do silly things.
