Vertical Farming Market Insights and Future Outlook, 2030
The global vertical farming market size is expected to reach USD 33.02 billion by 2030, according to a new report by Grand View Research, Inc. It is expected to expand at a CAGR of 25.5% from 2022 to 2030. Increased use of Internet of Things (IoT) sensors for producing crops is likely to spur market demand over the forecast period. Information obtained from the sensors is stored on the cloud and analyzed to perform the required actions.
The growing automation in agriculture and increasing use of big data and predictive analytics for maximizing yields are also likely to drive the market. Vertical farming is effective in ensuring stability in crop production and maintaining reliability even in adverse climatic conditions. It provides multiple benefits over the traditional farming technique, such as less use of water, the lesser need for agrochemicals, and low dependence on agricultural labor. Vertical farming makes use of metal reflectors and artificial lighting to maximize natural sunlight.
Genetically modified organisms and the environmental and health effects of pesticides and other non-natural substances that are used for increasing agricultural production have encouraged consumers to adopt organic foods. According to the Organic Trade Association, the U.S. organic industry sales increased by around 5% in 2019 owing to the increased investment in infrastructure and education. As per the Organic Foods Production Act of 1990, the handlers and growers of organic products need to comply with the regulations.

Artificial lighting helps in extending the hours of natural daylight, which further increases the health, growth rate, and yield of the plants. Artificial lighting such as high-pressure sodium lighting and LED lighting can extend the availability of crops (throughout a season). LED lighting systems produce a dual-band color spectrum and generate low heat. They are anticipated to witness significant growth over the forecast period.
A hydroponic system is a method of growing plants without soil. A hydroponic system eliminates the need for pesticides and artificial ripening agents and helps in producing nutritionally-rich vegetables. However, factors such as high initial investment and fewer crop varieties are likely to restrain the market growth.
Industry Insights By Major Competitors:
Key market players are involved in strategies such as partnerships, business expansions, new product developments, and contracts to expand their market share. The players are investing in R&D for product innovation and enhancement. The market is primarily dominated by lighting providers accounting for a major share.

Hydroponics in India:
A 45-minute drive from the city to Kharghar in neighbouring Navi Mumbai will lead to an enterprise, a little over a year-old, that is striving to promote a safe and alternate farming technique to rural and urban farmers. Called Craft (Center for Research in Alternative Farming Technologies), its aim is to create safe food for everyday consumption. Through research, training and practical application it is taking its ideas to entrepreneurs all over. "Finding safe food that is organically grown is hard and invariably the price one pays is high, not affordable by all," said founder Vijay Yelmalle. Keeping this in mind, they have developed two techniques in alternative farming - hydroponics and aquaponics. Hydroponics is a method of growing plants in water without soil, using mineral nutrient solutions. While in the traditional method, only minerals and salts are added, here additional nutrients are included to ensure that the produce has more benefits.

Farm Barges and Work Swaps
I was looking over this Kickstarter campaign a moment ago and it got me thinking. Specifically, about the above mentioned farm barges. I love the idea of taking a barge (that hasn't been used for chemicals, because who knows what that'd do), cleaning it up, and using it to grow produce. Well, maybe not trees. Unless they were dwarf fruiting trees, maybe. Anyway. This is something I would love to see being done; people floating up and down rivers and settled on lakes, selling their produce grown on their own barges. If someone could find a way to make that inexpensive (used, self-propelled barges seem to cost about $40k+), I could see it working. And people who couldn't afford to pay for their produce, could maybe do a work swap. Give an hour or two of your time helping to pull weeds, or lay down mulch and fertiliser, or something of the like, and you get your produce for free. The barge owner would get some help maintaining their crops, and the person would get fresh produce. Produce doesn't have to be the only thing one does, of course. There could be livestock barges. Cows, pigs, goats, sheep, and chickens (properly contained, of course), would be held on the barges full of grass, hay, and anything else good. I'm not sure how slaughtering would go. Perhaps, unload the animals you wanted slaughtered, and sell directly to another person who sold meat? I'm not entirely sure of the details, but I could see it working. Maybe. Goats are tricky little bastards, so they'd probably get out and that'd be trouble. But, yes. I would love to hear about this going on. I'm pretty certain that this sort of thing is actually going on somewhere, but I would love to hear about it and see it (honestly, if you know of somewhere this sort of thing is going on, I would love to see it, send me links or something!). And, seriously, check out that KS campaign, it looks nifty.
Dry Farming is an Alternative
Farmer David Little of Little Organic Farm grows potatoes without irrigation in a dry part of California.
This week, as the nation grapples with the worst drought in decades, theUSDA added more than 218 countiesto its list of natural disaster areas, bringing the total to 1,584 — more than half of all U.S. counties. Farmers in the Midwest and Great Plains have been the hardest hit, but the drought is a growing reality for farmers across the country, including California. While the Secretary of Agriculture won’t comment on the drought’s link to climate change, it’s at the forefront of everyone’s mind, and as global warming unfolds, knowledge of dryland agriculture will become increasingly valuable.
