I've seen a lot of Amabie art and decided to join in too and make a sketch with flat colors.

I might do a few mermaids for Mermay. This one isn’t a traditional mermaid, but a youkai called an Amabie -  a mystical, mermaid-like being believed to ward off plagues. Their main features are three tail fins, scales, a beak, human-like hair and a mysterious glow.

My youngest daughter was given the option to draw one for an extension project for online learning today, and I decided to have a crack at it too. In Japan people have been sharing images of Amabie online - take that Covid-19! You can read more about the online sharing here.

Amabie are said to ward off disease, and I love that so many people are sharing them as their own way to help during these stressful times! Here is my rendition.

WIP: Amabie.
