“...and that’s why I feel like, I don’t know, we’re kinda alone down here,” Rae says finally, gazing up at the stars above them. “You know?”
Mitchell says nothing, at least at first.
It’s a rare night that they can even see the stars over the city—usually smog and light pollution are enough to make it seem like there’s an eternal ceiling overhead, but for once it’s clear, and the air is cool and fresh and the night is young even though it’s dark and they’ve brought a blanket and a bottle of wine out to the park, just to chat, commiserate, for a while.
“Sorry,” Rae mutters after what feels like too long of a silence. “That probably came out all weird. I just—”
“No,” Mitchell says quickly. “That rocked.”
Rae raises her eyebrows. “Yeah?”
“Yeah, I mean. I get it.” She takes a sip of wine and sighs. “I gotta get out of here.”
“Me too,” Rae agrees. “I just don’t know where.”
Suddenly, Mitchell sits up, looking blankly at the city lights below them. “Well. Whatever happens, it’s definitely been real, Rae.”
Rae sits up slowly too. Thoughtfully. “Mitchell.”
They say nothing.
“Amber.”
She turns her head quickly, brown hair whipping behind them, and Rae leans over to kiss them once.
“Good luck out there, okay?”

The Asylum’s front door opens with a burst, and Mitchell spills out into the street in an uncoordinated spectacle of panic. She knows that people are watching her scramble for balance, knows she must look half a fool for failing to walk a straight line.
They’re laughing at you. Or they’re drunk. Take your pick.
It’s probably both.
The judgement of strangers feels hot and prickly on the back of her neck.
She couldn’t help but feel that she might have been better off never speaking with Jeanette before she made her mad dash to the door. The less she knew, the less there was to process and integrate into her view of the world. Malkavian tastes so familiar on the back of her tongue when she silently rolls the syllables around her mouth and in her head, but the sense of solidarity that came with the word was disconcerting. Could it be true? Could there really be a group of people like her , who would be able to understand her on a molecular level? What would that look like?
Do I even want that?
Unfamiliar familiarity.
How uncomfortable.
READ MORE. || READ FROM THE BEGINNING.
Los Angeles California, late 2004. Malkavian fledgling Amber Mitchell begins her new unlife as a pawn in the greater landscape of Kindred politics without much say in the matter. In spite of her new condition, however, she knows that there's no such thing as a permanent state of being--something she plans to cling onto, right alongside her waning humanity. Ventrue Katerina Irakleidis is a different story. Swept up into the convoluted L.A. scene for reasons she'd rather not get into (at least, as long as she can avoid it), she just wants to do as much damage control as she can on her own--without further eroding her already-fragile relationships.
