American Royals review *spoilers*
I never make posts but I have to rant. I just read American Royals and it was the biggest waste of my time. I’m not even going to thoroughly explain my points because that would just be giving it too much of my brain space.
The way this book was written came off as wayyyy more racist than I think the author intended. I’m not saying she’s racist, I’m saying the undertones in the text are racist. The way all the white characters(basically all of them) are described as beautiful,one of the only ones that could be seen as colored is constantly described as ugly???? also slavery was never really addressed other than for that one line: “ oh royals have made mistakes in the past *slavery* but we’re not gonna say it aloud bc that’s contreversial”
most of the characters are one-dimensional and really cartoonish
this book doesnt even know what it,s trying to be. are they going to go forth with the sacrifing everything for america or are they not
the dad’s cancer was a plot device in the worst way and it really diminishes what people that have cancer go through. like itsJUST a convenient plot device that’s only there to push the book forward when the author runs out of ideas. Oh we need a reason to make the forbidden romance as forbidden as possible?: DAD’S CANCER. Oh sam and bee need to become close again? : DAD’S CANCER. Oh we need a reason to make bee feel really bad breaking off her engagement?: DAD’S CANCER. other than that , it’s not acknowledged which makes it feel so disingenuous.
the ending is realy rushed and it feels like the characters themselves are getting tired of this and just want this to end as fast as possible
that being said , this is a book that you’re not going to want to put down and thats honestly just one more reason not to pick it up in the first place, you’re gonna feel the need to finisih it even though it brings you nothing but an aching waste of time
give it a shot though, you may find that im wrong and that its a really good book and theres really nothing else to do in quarantine that read somewhat shitty books that you just cant put down for the life of you
