Derek gets in an accident and loses a few years of his memory; suddenly everything is different— he's not a freshman loser anymore, but a popular senior, captain of the basketball team, a shoo-in for prom king, too, and he should have everything he's ever wanted— except he doesn't seem to be friends with Stiles anymore.

“You don’t think that piece of information would’ve been useful?!”, Stiles demands. “‘Hey, Stiles, Derek doesn’t remember anybody except you and oh by the way, he also somehow deleted the whole part where you broke up and haven’t spoken in over two years and thinks you’re still happily together. Yay.’”

There’s no immediate response to that, but the Sheriff and Scott both look sufficiently guilty.

“Stiles, you’ve got to understand the situation we were in here -”

“He tried to kiss me.”

The Sheriff sighs and rubs a hand across his eyes. “I know. And I’m...really sorry for that, but Stiles, what were we supposed to do? You’re the only one he’ll listen to, you’re his only --”

“He tried to kiss me.”

“We know”, Scott says, placatingly, and Stiles rounds on him, fists clenched and eyes blazing.

“No. No, you don’t”, he spits, “You have no idea.”

“Sir, will you calm down--”

“I will not calm down! Believe me, I am gonna sue the pants off of your entire institution if you do not release my husband to me right now!”

Derek gets a first glimpse of his-- his husband-- through the paneled window between his room and the hallway. He’s attractive, with soft-looking brown hair and brown eyes that are currently flashing with anger. He turns, looking at Derek through the window and mouths at him, It’s going to be okay.

Derek stares, watching him argue through the glass with the doctors, transfixed.

He married a gorgeous man who is passionate and well spoken, with expressive hands that have long, tapered fingers. Derek drinks in all the visual information he can: his husband’s plaid overshirt’s collar is half flipped, half not, like he got dressed in a hurry. He must have been worried about Derek, and Derek feels a pang of guilt, getting in some sort of accident and injuring himself terribly. He hopes his husband won’t take the news of the memory loss too badly.

Derek still loves him, he’ll have to make certain his husband knows.

Summary:

Everything that he was got burned out of him, turned to ash and shadow just like everyone he loved. He was hollowed out and empty, and it hurt like claws across exposed nerves.

Then, it was done.

"Earth to Derek. You okay, man?" Derek's eyes are drawn back to the guy in front of him, who's starting to look more worried now. "I --" he starts, then swallows against the dryness. "Who are you?"

Derek losing his memory but still gravitating towards Scott and Stiles and instinctively trusting them. Derek being taken everywhere with our by Scott and Stiles so at least one is present. Derek asking them where he lives and what he's like. Derek sensing they lied about having ever hurt him before but accepting their apology and saying he should probably be sorry too for all he knows. Derek remembering and liking the familiarity of their scents. Scott and Stiles not knowing what Derek likes so they get everything on a menu and ask him to try some while hoping he isn't allergic to anything. Scott and Stiles finding Derek clothes that are a mix of his old ones with new ones after Lydia helps. Scott and Stiles having to tell Derek about his family along with Cora Erica and Boyd and not to trust Peter. Derek telling them they all feel like pack.

It’s a popular joke among Alphas: fuck an Omega, get heartbreak on your hands. Omegas are fragile little emotional things, needy and whiny. Stiles refuses to become that, or to believe that he’s anything like that.

Stiles and Derek have been fuckbuddies for a while when Derek loses his memories of the past three years - and them - in an accident.
