I recently began wondering about Aizawa's amputation because I want to write about it. However, because I cannot be normal, that means I looked into more than I needed to, and I would like to share some of my (admittedly obvious) findings:

So when amputating his leg (below the joint), it was said to be a 'clean-cut' from the job of his knife. In medical terms, he had a traumatic 'guillotine-type' amputation. Which, by the way, is insane skill for him to do! His knife must've been sharp as hell AND had the force and swing to back it up, its no easy task to cut THROUGH bone (that's why there are bone saws in the medical field! I own a vintage one from WWII) The thing is, reattachment rates for these types of amputations is a high rate of success (around seventy to ninety percent) if done in the six to twenty-four time frame. This led me to question why Aizawa didn't reattach his limb.

In the world of advanced healing and quirks, reattachment that quick could be possible. Aizawa's injury would count as high priority due to how important the quirk erasure is, and the loss of blood. These types of amputations have low-risk of infection too due to no skin flaps and all layers being even with each other (not that this type of amputation doesn't get infected ever! Just lower than other (non)traumatic amputations). Of course, there would be downside of relearning your limb— reattachment/replantation isn't perfect— but that would happen regardless.

However, there are also many factors on why Aizawa couldn't get reattachment surgery (which is roughly a two-step surgery). Obviously, one being the quirk-destroying bullet. I am unsure how the quirk-destroying bullets work on a more technical level, but I am sure it's by entering the blood stream and being transferred to the quirk factor. Aizawa was hit by an original Shie Hassaikai bullet, so if it reached his quirk factor he would lose erasure forever. If a drug or any kind of infection is present in the amputation sight, reattachment is not possible due to the short time frame and the bloodstream not being cleared.

The drug would then be stagnant and stay in the severed limb as it is no longer connected to the liver or the kidneys. Which means, if Aizawa ate his severed limb like how I want him to, his limb cutting would be null and he would still lose his quirk. This obviously puts a damper on my plans, and now I am stumped and on the edge of there being a detox quirk for severed limbs only.

BnHA/MHA chapter 282 reaction and spoilers

I like the use of Eri in the flashbacks as Aizawa gets hit with the quirk bullet. For one, it reminds the audience whose quirk those bullets are based off, which could even mean that Aizawa’s loss of quirk won’t be permament, and for two, it highlights what’s most important to Aizawa, what he’s protecting. It’s also why he doesn’t move more readily out of the way, because much like Eri is someone he wants to protect, his students are as well. If he breaks his quirk against Shigaraki, then Shigaraki will be able to use AFO and Decay. However, in the off chance Shigaraki might miss since he’s throwing the bullet, if Aizawa keeps staring at him, then Shigaraki wouldn’t have been able to recover his quirks if the bullet missed. .

Apparently this is where Aizawa cut his leg off, which I didn’t catch until someone pointed it out to me, so I decided to delete my first post of this reaction and amend some things so I don’t have to field replies/asks about missing this key detail. Sorry if you see this post twice. 

That said, I thought that it looked almost like Aizawa purposefully took the bullet to his leg, which is why I started rambling about how he’s keeping his quirk up against Shigaraki as long as possible, but at the time I thought “This makes no sense,” but now that I see he DID cut his leg off, that makes somewhat more sense because it might have been a conscious choice especially with the knife in his hand.

However, I am curious if you got the bullet out of Aizawa’s leg if you could reuse it or if the Rewind serum has already been used up from one shot.

Todoroki just straight up ice stabbed Shigaraki. Amazing. Also, I figured Todoroki would show up in this type of situation. Now we just need to figure out where Bakugou went off to because he’s mysteriously disappeared in the last couple of chapters here so he’s also got some kind of plan.

At first I thought that Shigaraki might have decayed Aizawa’s eyes, but looking back a couple pages it appears he put his hand over Aizawa’s face much like Kotarou’s hand rested on Shigaraki’s face when we first met him and then decayed the flesh if not also muscle as well. Depending on how deep Shigaraki penetrated Aizawa’s face and skull, he might be dead or perhaps severely wounded. This could even lead to frontal lobe brain damage possibly if he survives depending on depth of penetration.

Knowing now that Aizawa cut his leg off before the quirk erasing bullet could take effect, it leaves me with some questions. Given that some people have their appendix on the left side of their bodies and some people have their hearts in the center of their chests and sometimes to the right side of their bodies, which toe your quirk is stored in might be variant from person to person. So it’s possible the leg Aizawa cut off didn’t have the toe that holds his quirk, it’s also possible it did and he’s quirkless either way. I’m also curious given that Shigaraki could use his quirks when he grabbed Aizawa’s face, if he could also use AFO. So it’s possible that Shigaraki is in possession of Erasure in the off chance Aizawa didn’t actually lose his quirk.

Now, of course, it’s possible that Aizawa cut his leg off not just because he had a 50/50 chance (or perhaps 100% chance if his quirk was stored in the left side of his body) of retaining his quirk but that he could preserve the quirk ending bullet which then could be analyzed so people like Mirio could get their quirks back faster.

”So you protected him, so what?” Well at least we know for now, Aizwa is not dead.

I swear my brain went completely blank at that emergency announcement.

I don’t…I don’t know what to make of this city-destroying supermassive villain. Honestly it almost looks like Gigantomachia’s parents showed up to throw down because they heard their son was in trouble. I mean I know that’s not the intent here but it still looks like that.

Reflecting on episode 98:

Fuegoleon was really surprised to learn Mereoleona was the captain of the Crimson Lions and pointed out that she isn't really into the whole magic knight thing in general. The narrative also seems to heavily imply that the Crimson Lions captaincy might be an inherited captaincy. Fuegoleon took over from their dad, Leopold seems super certain he will be captain one day, etc... So I'm thinking Mereoleona took over even though it's not really her thing not only because revenge, but possibly also because otherwise Leopold would become captain and he’s only 16 or 17 depending on when August is in the storyline so he's been at this magic knight thing for months or over a year most likely. So like green teen child soldier leading an elite squad is a bit much (and we see this in how Leopold loses control of the situation when he doesn't retreat with the injured). Why put her littlest brother through a captaincy during an invasion from Eye of the Midnight Sun when he’s ill-equipped for it emotionally? That’s like Big Sister 101 especially after Fuegoleon ended up unconscious and amputated. 

It’s interesting and I’m looking forward to learning more when we get to what’s covered in the gap between episode 98 and chapter 214 where I picked up reading the manga.

I really love your chasing thunderstorm, I really wondered if you coud make a drabble about Hiccup still new with his prostetic, and wile Astrids gone he find out beacuse he is so subborn as he is, he will take a shower alone, he kinda leave his protetic on and crutches and jump to the bathrom. when he got his pants off and turned on the shower he slips, He and then he really realise his foot is gone, and start crying more off a shock and then Astrid comes and find him as a emotial werck?

Thank you, but I really can’t write this, anon.  I’m really happy with the way that I dealt with amputation in Chasing and especially Stages, and the steps that I took were based off of a whole lot of research on the psychology of amputees, and you can read a little about that here if you’re interested.

Not to mention that in the aftermath of the amputation, there was already a shower chair installed for safety reasons, which could be anything from this simple model  which might look familiar as it’s also something that injured or aging people use when they can’t stand for the entire duration of a shower, to something more complex like this guy.  

And I'll summarize the info here, even if you're not interested.  They've done studies on soldiers and diabetics and the amputee cross section of the population as a whole and the results have been pretty much unanimous.  The people that handle an amputation the best are those who can joke about it.  I don't know if Dreamworks is so brilliant that they did this on purpose, but the fact is if Hiccup had Toothless and his dad's love and the respect of the other kids, he'd likely be just fine after adjusting.  

And this is even more the case in chasing, due to the coma concurrent with the amputation.  He's happy to be alive, he was out for three weeks, his leg, while concerning, is the least of his problems.  His brain is sluggish, he's missing very important memories and the leg exists in a physical place that he doesn't really inhabit.  He's never been athletic or graceful, he didn't lose a part of his life with his leg, he lost it when his brain felt dull.

Henry knows his foot is gone from the second he sees it, the second that people he trusts try and explain it to him.  And while he's not alright with it, people very rarely get to a point where they're 100% alright with losing a limb, he sees it as a challenge.  It's a problem to outthink, something extremely unfunny that he can make people laugh at.  

I hope this satisfied some questions, even if it didn't come in drabble form.
