I’m going to start this post off by saying I think public colleges and community colleges should be free or at least cheaper.

That being said, I do believe that paying for things makes you appreciate them more. My roommate is given money for school. We aren’t talking scholarships or anything merit-based, just given money.

She gets her tuition fully paid, is given a school supply stipend at the beginning of each semester, and is provided a living stipend every month. She is given so much money that she doesn’t have to work (she currently does, but that’s out of the norm) and has enough money left over that she can put almost a thousand dollars a month away in savings (or spend it). She also has no appreciation for school and literally thinks that her professors and TA’s are there to serve her. She gets mad when professors call her out about not going to class or penalize her for her lack of showing up. She even never showed up to a class, purposely failed, and then was mad when the professor told the school she was a “no show.”

And then she tries to garner sympathy from me, which I have no time for because I a) paid for school and b) if I failed a class, I still had to pay to retake it (she does not). I also very much appreciate my education because it was something I worked very hard to keep up and to struggle through. She cares, but also, couldn’t care less. She thinks that she is already ten times smarter than everyone, consistently talks down about her classmates (’I mean I know this is a community college, but they’re all so dumb’), and honestly failing isn’t bad in her mind because she has no money invested. This is just fun times for her while she gets a degree she doesn’t want just to make money and then switch careers in 5 years.

This all being said: college should be free because those who would appreciate it, still would appreciate it. However, putting money and time and effort into something makes you appreciate it even more and I think that parents who just toss money away on dumb shit raise children who have no wherewithal and appreciation for what they have.

They also raise kids who don’t care about electricity bills
