Ok, so I watched CINAMATIC HISTORY in Indie Animation unfold, and by that I mean I watched Knights of Guineviere.
I'm completely on board with this show and what it's doing. The characters (Frankie, my beloved), the setting (which is a big F you to Disney), and the gorgeous animation.
But with this post, I'd like to discuss what the two main characters represent (in my opinion): the opposing perspectives that people have towards Disney/corporate companies.
From the get-go, we see that Frankie is the one with a lot of positivity. Way more than Andi. It seems that even though they are very different, they do enjoy each other's company and are friends.
But their perspectives on the park (and on working for it) vary.
It's here where we see their outlook on the park. Frankie still retains her nostalgia, even though it doesn't blind her to its flaws. And this is what her perspective symbolizes. She represents those who want to see the good in the company despite seeing the flaws. Also, someone who has rose-tinted glasses and their love for the park shines through. The person whose childhood was defined by their fond memories of it, and prefers to see it for what it's supposed to do: spread happiness to the people.
She expresses interest in working there because she knows she'll enjoy it (alongside Andi). Even when Andi is shown to treat it as a means to get by and doesn't seem to enjoy it, treating it as any other job.
On the other hand, Andi represents those who are jaded and see the corporation for what it is. Seeing through its lies and seeing the corporation seeking money through its labor. (Which she has firsthand experience with) Trying to squeeze hard labor from the workers to get out what they can. Just like what we see, Park Planet is going downhill and is doing stuff for the sake of it.
Park Planet is doing this, like some companies nowadays, which just pump out stuff with a focus on quantity over quality. Even overworking them, which Andi is shown to endure.
This side/perspective also represents people who are just done with it, and want to see it change for the better. Not just for them, but for others. Also, the people who've lost their hope and love for what they previously had a passion for.
Kinda like us with the state of animation as a whole. With all of the sequels, live-action remakes, and corporate cash grabs, we can only hope that things get better from here.
And they have, with this show and other indie animated shows like it.
