FTM!Gren Headcanons
Gren first came out when he was sixteen, immediately after moving out of his parents house to go start training to become a knight.
He joined the knight corp under his chosen name, and marked down “male” on the forms.
The name “Gren” came from the main character of the only book he owned as a child.
He had been hoping to keep him being afab secret for the rest of his life, but one week after combat training started, he got jabbed in the side with a wooden sword. It knocked the wind right out of him, and he collapsed on the floor. He got sent to the infirmary. He had to take his shirt off during the medical exam, but he made the doctor swear to secrecy.
When he was a teenager he was considered himself lucky to be very androgynous. But as he grew up and everyone around him became chizzled and masculine, Gren’s face stayed the same.
This earned him the nickname “Baby Face”. He knew no harm was actually meant by it, but he felt a huge pang of dysphoria every time he heard it.
After finishing his training, he was assigned to Anamaya’s squad. Admittedly, he was shocked to find that a general in the Royal Guard was deaf. He didn’t know any ASL, but she had an interpreter which was nice.
Gren got injured during his second battle. He had gotten knocked off of his horse and dislocated his shoulder in the fall. One of his mates helped him get back to camp, but the entire trip back he was panicking. He would have to take off his shirt in order to get the joint set back in place. When they got back Anamaya immediately signed for him to take his armour off so his shoulder could be put back into place before they started debriefing. Gren became very defensive and tried to convince her that he was fine.
Anamaya wasn’t having it.
It wasn’t until she could see the panicked expression of Gren’s face that she pulled him aside and into the medical tent. She gave him a stern “take your damned shirt off or so help me” look, and that was all it took for him to swallow what pride he had and started stripping off his armor. The entire time thoughts about how he was going to be tried for treason and kicked out of the Guard for falsifying his application documents.
His chest underneath was bound with cloth bandages. He was expecting Anamaya to make some kind of comment, or at least look disgusted, but instead she stepped behind him and gripped onto his shoulder. She tapped his non-dislocated shoulder three times before forcing the joint back into place.
Afterwards she pulled out a pice of paper and wrote something on it before passing it to him. “Boy or Girl?” Gren circled “Boy” and passed it back to her. Anamaya just nodded and the topic never came up again.
Gren started learning ASL immediately afterwards.
As they got closer, and could have full conversations in sign language, he started talking to Anamaya about growing up afab, hiding it to join the Royal Guard, general dysphoria he experienced, and how good it was to actually open up to someone.
Right before he became Anamaya’s primary interpreter he found a mage who specialized in transformations. It cost him just about every penny he’d saved up, but he got a set of potions that would turn his body into that of a males.
I likely have more to come!!!
