Dr. Louis Auzoux (1797-1880) was a French physician most known for his revolutionary paper maché models in the medical field. His extensive anatomical knowledge was passed on to generations of students by the use of chalk paper educational plates that he designed, and used in schools across France through the 1960's. This is a very rare and hard to find poster after the original art, a lithograph printed in 1947 as titled on the piece next to the artist name. 41"x53" *does have a tear in the top right corner. I recently stumbled across the amazing paper art of Lisa Nilsson. These anatomical cross-sections are made of Japanese mulberry paper and pages from old books that had edges gilded in gold. These works are constructed using a technique of rolling and shaping narrow strips of paper called 'quilling' or 'paper filigree'. Quilling was first practiced by Renaissance nuns and monks who made artistic use of the gilded edges of worn out bibles, then later by crafty 18th century woman.
