I recently stumbled across the amazing paper art of Lisa Nilsson. These anatomical cross-sections are made of Japanese mulberry paper and pages from old books that had edges gilded in gold. These works are constructed using a technique of rolling and shaping narrow strips of paper called 'quilling' or 'paper filigree'. Quilling was first practiced by Renaissance nuns and monks who made artistic use of the gilded edges of worn out bibles, then later by crafty 18th century woman. Check out Lisa's website to see her entire anatomical series. http://lisanilssonart.com/section/282102_Tissue_Series.html
