I adore the Found Family trope. It is one of my favorite tropes and it often carries a defiant, hopeful tone to it. Every fandom is made better with Found Family fics in them.

I just wish that we could lay off the nuclear family ideal of it I often find in fics. Even if there is a lesbian or gay couple, someone is “Mom” and someone is “Dad.” Even when it doesn’t really make sense or they are so close in age that siblings would work far better. I hate the heteronormativity of it. Someone asked my uncle, who has been in a relationship with his partner for pretty much my entire life, who was the “woman” in the relationship. He pointed out that was why it was a gay relationship: because there were only men, no women, involved in it.

A group of people can fit the Found Family trope without involving the heteronormative nuclear family model. There doesn’t need to be a Mom and Dad and Children and maybe a Wine Aunt to make a family. You don’t need a parent figure in a group to make it a family. It can be a group of chaotic individuals who love each other and want to stick with each other and don’t designate who it was in their little family. Sometimes it seems so forced, the characters shoved in such relationships, that everything immediately becomes OOC and I lose interest.

If you are making a Found Family fic which stars two gay men and you still have one of them as “Mom,” you might want to take a look at yourself. Same with a lesbian relationship or other queer relationships. Why are you so determined to create a hetero relationship in a non-het pairing??

Usual disclaimers apply: if it makes you happy, feel free to write it, and people should be able to write fics that make them happy without readers leaving nasty comments. I start reading, see those tropes, realize those tropes are going to dominate the story, and decide that is my cue to leave the fic. The end.
