Makes sense, he left when Sokka was 13, so barely got any teen-ness. And suddenly in Book 3 he's dealing with two angsty teenagers who are traumatized as *FUCK* and also not exactly cool with/over the fact their father left them alone.
Oh and also all of their weirdo teenage friends, y'know 2 kids at wild extremes of human sizes who were rebels who lived in trees fighting the fire nation after being orphaned(?) at an undisclosed age, a rich pre-teen who's blind and also has reinvented what it means to be an earthbender oh and don't forget, the pre-teen who's literally a god and a spirit in one with abilities beyond comprehension that also haven't been seen in a century who's been brought back by water necromancy.
The fact the man is being totally casual and not tearing his hair out is a fucking miracle
Especially given as, at least to me, he seems quite young. Makes sense for wartime, people tend to marry and/or have kids younger. Like in my mind this guy is in his mid 30s (which also makes Kyas death sadder given how damn young she would have been), physically still in his prime (because dayum) as such chief and commander of his fleet.
Bro signed up to fight a war, avenge his wife, and hope to prevent the war from reaching his children again. Not,,,, whatever in god's name *this* shit is.
Oh and also there's a giant sea serpent trying to kill them again, cool, that may as well also happen
