10 CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED ANIME THAT DESERVE ALL YOUR ATTENTION (And Why You’re Sleeping On Them)
I’m gonna be real with you - I’m tired of seeing the same anime recommended over and over. Don’t get me wrong, I love Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen as much as the next person, but there are SO many incredible shows that nobody’s talking about and it’s driving me crazy.
These aren’t your “hidden gems that 3 people watched.” These are quality anime that flew under the radar because they didn’t have massive marketing or dropped during a stacked season. Some of these genuinely moved me more than the mainstream hits, and I need more people to experience them so we can talk about it.
Let’s fix that right now.
Okay so imagine if John Wick was an anime about a legendary assassin forced to live as a normal person for a year without killing anyone. That’s The Fable.
This show is SO GOOD and literally nobody watched it. The main character Akira is this emotionless hitman who has to learn how to be a regular human, and watching him try to understand normal social interactions while suppressing his killer instincts is both hilarious and touching.
Why you’re sleeping on it: It dropped in 2024 with zero hype and got buried under Solo Leveling discourse. Also the art style looks “generic” in screenshots but the animation during action scenes? Chef’s kiss.
Why you need to watch it: Perfect blend of dark comedy, slice-of-life, and occasional brutal action. If you loved Spy x Family’s balance of wholesome and dangerous, this hits similar vibes but darker.

#9 - ORB: ON THE MOVEMENTS OF THE EARTH
This anime made me cry about ASTRONOMY. Let me repeat - I cried about the heliocentric theory.
Set in 15th century Europe during the Inquisition, it follows people risking their lives to prove the Earth revolves around the sun. Sounds boring? It’s one of the most gripping, beautifully told stories about passion, sacrifice, and the pursuit of truth I’ve ever seen.
Why you’re sleeping on it: Historical setting scared people away. No flashy powers, no waifus, just pure storytelling. Also got completely overshadowed by Solo Leveling hype in early 2025.
Why you NEED to watch it: If you loved Steins;Gate’s science passion or Vinland Saga’s historical weight, this will destroy you emotionally in the best way. Every episode left me thinking about it for days.

#8 - VIVY: FLUORITE EYE’S SONG
Time-traveling AI tries to prevent a war between humans and robots 100 years in the future. Already hooked? You should be.
Vivy is a singing AI who partners with a time-traveling AI from the future to change key moments in history. The animation is STUNNING, the music is incredible, and the emotional payoff? I wasn’t ready for how hard this hit.
Why you’re sleeping on it: Dropped in 2021 and got buried. Also “AI anime” sounds generic until you actually watch it and realize it’s about what it means to have a soul.
Why you need to watch it: If Re:Zero’s time loop suffering and Violet Evergarden’s emotional depth had a baby, it would be Vivy. The final episode broke me.

War anime that actually explores the cost of war instead of glorifying it. The Republic claims to have zero casualties in their war against autonomous drones. That’s a lie. They’re sending “non-humans” to die in unmanned mechs.
This show tackles racism, dehumanization, survivor’s guilt, and PTSD better than most live-action war films. The characters feel real. Their trauma feels real. And the mech battles? Absolutely gorgeous.
Why you’re sleeping on it: Season 1 had pacing issues that scared people off. Season 2 fixed everything but by then half the viewers left.
Why you need to watch it: If you loved Code Geass’s political commentary or Attack on Titan’s exploration of prejudice, 86 does it even better. Also Lena and Shin’s relationship is beautiful and painful.

A music anime about outcasts forming a band. But make it raw, real, and CGI that actually works.
These aren’t cute high school girls doing K-ON things. These are struggling young adults dealing with bullying trauma, family issues, and trying to find where they belong. The CGI animation makes the concert scenes feel ALIVE in a way traditional animation can’t capture.
Why you’re sleeping on it: CGI scared people away. “Another band anime” fatigue. Dropped during a stacked season.
Why you need to watch it: If you loved Bocchi the Rock but want something more mature and grounded, this is it. The character writing is phenomenal and the music SLAPS.

A deaf prince who everyone underestimates goes on a journey to become the greatest king. DO NOT let the art style fool you - this show will RIP YOUR HEART OUT.
Bojji is the sweetest, most determined protagonist and watching people underestimate him only to realize how strong he actually is never gets old. The story goes places I didn’t expect and every character has depth.
Why you’re sleeping on it: Art style looks like a kid’s show. People judged it without watching.
Why you need to watch it: If Made in Abyss taught you that cute art can hide devastating stories, Ranking of Kings does the same. Legitimately one of the best character arcs I’ve ever seen.

Historical action about a kid who survives his family’s massacre and trains to reclaim his throne. Except it’s also HILARIOUS and has some of the most insane animation I’ve seen.
The tone whiplash between silly comedy and brutal historical violence shouldn’t work but it DOES. CloverWorks went absolutely crazy with the animation - every fight scene is sakuga heaven.
Why you’re sleeping on it: Inconsistent tone confused people. Historical setting isn’t trendy.
Why you need to watch it: If you loved Demon Slayer’s animation quality and Gintama’s ability to switch from comedy to serious, this nails both. The art direction is genuinely experimental and gorgeous.

A mystery thriller about a walrus taxi driver. Yes really. No, I’m not kidding.
This show looks like a cute animal cartoon. It is NOT. It’s a noir mystery with interconnected storylines, social commentary about idol culture and social media, and one of the tightest scripts in anime. Every single detail matters. Every conversation pays off.
Why you’re sleeping on it: Furry art style made people think it’s for kids or weird. It’s neither.
Why you need to watch it: If you loved Death Note’s mind games or Baccano’s interconnected storytelling, Odd Taxi does it perfectly in 13 episodes. The finale will blow your mind.

Chinese donghua (yes, give it a chance) about two guys who can send people’s consciousness back in time through photographs. They run a business helping clients fix past regrets.
Every arc starts wholesome and ends devastating. The time travel rules are consistent and clever. The emotional payoff of each story lives in my head rent-free. And that plot twist in season 1? I screamed.
Why you’re sleeping on it: It’s Chinese, not Japanese. Donghua stigma is real and stupid.
Why you need to watch it: If Steins;Gate and Erased had a baby with The Butterfly Effect, it would be Link Click. Season 2 gets even better. The dub is excellent too.

I know some people have seen this but NOT ENOUGH. Two kids descend into a mysterious abyss searching for a lost mother. Cute art style. Nightmare fuel content.
This show is BRUTAL. Emotionally, physically, psychologically brutal. But it’s also one of the most beautifully crafted stories about resilience, friendship, and the cost of pursuing your dreams. The world-building is unmatched.
Why you’re STILL sleeping on it: Looks like a kid’s show. Dark reputation scares people. It’s been 8 years and people still haven’t given it a chance.
Why you NEED to watch it: If you want an adventure that feels like a Studio Ghibli film directed by someone who wants to hurt you, this is it. Season 2 is even better and more devastating.

I’m so tired of people saying “anime peaked in the 2000s” or “nothing good comes out anymore.” These shows EXIST. They’re RIGHT THERE. You’re just not watching them because they don’t have a massive marketing budget or aren’t on every “Top 10” list.
Stop waiting for someone to tell you what’s good. Take a chance on something that looks interesting. Not every show needs to be the next Attack on Titan to be worth your time.
So which one are you watching first? Drop a comment and tell me. And if you’ve already seen any of these, PLEASE tell me I’m not alone in thinking they’re incredible.
Also, if you have your own underrated picks, drop them below. I’m always looking for my next obsession.
Stop sleeping. Start watching. ✨
