everyone’s acting like DanDaDan is the best thing to happen to anime in a decade and I’m sitting here like… are we watching the same show?

don’t come for me yet hear me out

the animation is gorgeous. the opening is fire. Okarun and Momo are cute together. but can we stop pretending this show invented anything? it’s literally Mob Psycho + Chainsaw Man + a romcom and somehow everyone’s calling it revolutionary

what DanDaDan actually is:

• insane sakuga covering up a pretty basic plot

• fanservice that gets a pass because “it’s done ironically”

• a fun show that doesn’t need to be called peak to be worth watching

and that’s FINE. not everything has to be a masterpiece. but the discourse around this show is exhausting because people can’t just say “I’m having fun” without crowning it anime of the decade

you know what kills me? we had Dungeon Meshi this same year. actual themes. character arcs that matter. world building that makes sense. but everyone’s too busy losing their minds over aliens fighting ghosts to appreciate actual storytelling

I’m still watching DanDaDan btw. I’m enjoying it. but enjoying something and calling it perfect are two different things and the anime community forgot how to separate those

the hype cycle is setting people up to be disappointed when they go in expecting god-tier and get “solid action comedy with great animation” instead

this is gonna make people mad and honestly? good. I want to know what shows YOU think are overhyped right now. not because I want to fight but because I’m genuinely curious if I’m alone in this

Poll Results — Quick Summary & What I’ll Do Next

Huge thank you to everyone who voted and dropped opinions, I read every single reply btw. Here’s what the poll showed and how I’m changing the demo because of it.

1) MC’s Family & the Treason Plotline

Result: 89% voted to make the family’s situation more realistic (house arrest / moved away from the palace), 10% preferred keeping things as-is.

Conclusion: I’m changing the opening to make the consequences clearer, titles stripped, temporary house arrest, and relocation to an estate where the family is under close watch. It’s a small rewrite but it helps the plot land harder.

2) Yeon & the Bathing Scene

Result: 51% want Yeon to stay gender-selectable; 49% wanted Yeon gender-locked to match the MC.

Conclusion: Close split, Yeon remains gender-selectable, but if Yeon is of the opposite gender to the MC they will not be the MC’s personal washer. In those cases I’ll introduce a same-gender attendant who handles the bath scenes and other spoiler stuff.

3) The Friends introduction pacing

Result: 66% want a slower, more deliberate intro to the friends; 33% were fine with the current pace.

Conclusion: Slower introduction it is.

4) MC’s Backstory POV

Result: 79% prefer Seung-Ah’s POV to carry the backstory, 20% want it in the MC’s POV.

Conclusion: I’ll keep the backstory scenes framed through Seung-Ah pov.

Bonus - Who you plan to romance

Megadeth's "Tipping Point" song was awful.

Megadeth is going to retire. This album will be their last. They released a song, as a teaser. For Megadeth's standards, it was absolutely average. Recycled riffs, no groove, terrible lyrics. But several fans in their initial hype are praising this like it's a peak song.

It's like they are only hyping it up because it's a Megadeth song.

I feel all these statements…

Nach über 150 Büchern, die ich 2025 gelesen habe (exklusive DNFs), muss ich sagen, dass ich mir bestimmte „Storylines“ einfach nicht mehr geben kann. After reading over 150 books in 2025 (excluding DNFs), I have to say that I simply can't stand certain storylines anymore.

Aktuelles Beispiel: In meinem Buchclub lesen wir diesen Monat „Arcana Academy“ von Elise Kova. Und ich habe echte Motivationsprobleme, das Buch weiter zu lesen. Ich habe gefühlt die Story schon hundertmal gelesen. Die Charaktere sind so vorhersehbar - vor allem, der FML Charaktertyp ist bereits so häufig ausgekotzt worden und auf Konflikte bzw. Konfrontationen ausgelegt, dass sich mir die Fußnägel kräuseln. Außerdem kann ich diesen Typ obendrein auch nicht leiden. Ich kann keine Bindung zu Nebencharakteren aufbauen, weil es nur Namen sind und sie außer einer äußerlichen Beschreibung kaum von einander unterscheidbar sind. Es ist eigentlich nur die Frage noch offen, wer jetzt von den ganzen vermeintlich engen Freunden FML verraten wird und wer der große Bösewicht am Ende sein wird (bestimmt der Bruder vom ML). Knapp 700 Seiten und ich weiß nicht, ob ich die schaffen werde… Current example: In my book club, we are reading "Arcana Academy" by Elise Kova this month. The characters are so predictable – especially the FML character type, which has been done to death and is designed for conflict and confrontation, which makes my toenails curl. I can't connect with the secondary characters because they're just names and, apart from a physical description, they're hardly recognisable from one another. The only question that remains is which of FML's supposedly close friends will betray her and who will turn out to be the main villain in the end (probably ML's brother). It's almost 700 pages and I don't know if I'll make it...

Ich meine, ja klar, manchmal brauche ich auch eine Story, die ich predigten kann, die einfach leicht ist… aber wo findet man denn heute noch wirklich besondere und einzigartige Werke? Wie oft bin ich jetzt auf Empfehlungen von BookTok, Bookstagram, BookTube etc. hereingefallen? Ich vertraue kaum noch einem Hype. Reviews zu lesen ist auch nicht immer hilfreich - da spiegeln sich auch nur die Aussagen der restlichen Social Media Plattformen. I get it, sometimes I need a story that I can just chill out with... but where can you find really special and unique books these days? How many times have I fallen for recommendations from BookTok, Bookstagram, BookTube, etc.? I hardly trust any hype anymore. Reading reviews isn't always helpful either – they just reflect the statements made on other social media platforms.

Cross (Season 2)

I enjoyed season one, as it was tense, different, and interesting (I haven’t read the books, so I can’t compare). Unfortunately, season two is an absolute mess. The mystery isn’t particularly compelling, and the characters spend more time trying to get one another into bed than actually solving the crime. It’s really not as good as it pretends to be. I won’t even bother finishing the season — after four episodes, I’ve seen enough and don’t care how it ends.

My favourite character is 'Bobby Trey' played by Johnny Ray Gill. Maybe they should make a series about his exploits.
