Crack theory: Since Netflix was determined to nail the “One Piece” live action adaptation, they wanted to make sure they hit all the necessary anime-isms (crazy fight scenes, strange hair, power of friendship, etc). However, when Netflix realized that gratuitous fanservice is also an anime-ism, they realized that they needed to tread lightly to avoid backlash and accusations of misogyny from general audiences. So, Netflix decided to give us fanservice with a character that won’t generate any controversy.
