Bishōjo Senshi Sailor Moon Super S Zenin Sanka!! Shuyaku Sōdatsusen is an updated and enhanced version of the previous SNES release Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon S: Jougai Ranto!? Shuyaku Soudatsusen from 1994. This updated version again was exclusive to the SNES and only released in Japan.

Dragon Ball Z Idainaru Dragon Ball Densetsu - Console Fighting Games of 1996

Dragon Ball Z Idainaru Dragon Ball Densetsu (also known as Dragon Ball Z Legends or Dragon Ball Z: The Legend) is a 1996 fighting game released for the Sega Saturn and PlayStation. The game retells the story beginning with the Saiyan Saga and the battles against Vegeta and Nappa, but uses a unique team‑based system instead of traditional one‑on‑one fights.

Before each battle, players select three fighters from a pool of four (later six). Each character has two gauges,  a green life bar and a yellow power bar that drains with every attack. Combat revolves around the Power Balance Gauge, a blue‑and‑red tug‑of‑war meter at the bottom of the screen. Attacks don’t directly damage opponents; instead, they shift the gauge. When one side fully overtakes the other, a cinematic attack sequence triggers, dealing actual damage. This system creates a fast, chaotic, and highly strategic take on Dragon Ball combat.

Dragon Ball Z Hyper Dimension - Console Fighting Games of 1996

Dragon Ball Z Hyper Dimension is Based on the Dragon Ball Z series and features 10 playable fighters with Freeza, Gotenks, Perfect Cell, Piccolo, Son Goku, Ultimate Gohan,  Kid Buu, Majin Buu, Majin Vegeta and Vegetto.

Developed by Tose and published by Bandai,  Dragon Ball Z Hyper Dimension  released exclusively on the SNES in March of 1996, the game was also exclusive to Japan.

Breakers - Console Fighting Games of 1996

Breakers was a shot lived fighting game series from the mid to late 90s, Breakers was developed by Visco Corporation and was released on the Neo Geo and in Arcades in 1996.

The game also received a release for the Neo Geo CD in 1997 and was ported to the Dreamcast in 2017. Breakers received a sequel in 1998 called Breakers Revenge, this entry in the series was exclusive to Arcades.

This exclusivity lasted until 2023, when an updated version of the games was released on Windows worldwide and the Nintendo Switch in the US.

Developed by Kid Corp for the Sega Saturn, Bishōjo Senshi Sailor Moon Super S Various Emotion is a 2d fighting game using the Sailor Moon licence and loosely based on the manga and anime. 

With a story and versus mode available as well as a roster of 10 fighters including Sailor Moon, Sailor Chibi Moon, Sailor Venus, Sailor Mars, Sailor Pluto and Sailor Saturn. 

Bishōjo Senshi Sailor Moon Super S Various Emotion released exclusively on the Sega Saturn and exclusively in Japan in November of 1996 and maybe is the 22nd game since 1992 based on the Sailor Moon licence.

Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer - Console Fighting Games of 1995

Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer (1995) is Technos Japan’s stylish, anime‑driven 2D fighter set in a post‑apocalyptic future where Tokyo has been destroyed and society rebuilt on a man‑made island. When violence erupts at the National Belnar Institute, new transfer student Isato Kaiza steps forward — secretly the transforming hero Gowcaizer, empowered by an energy‑manifesting stone. His mission is to uncover the source of the island’s corruption and restore peace to Japan.

The game features ten playable fighters, each with unique abilities and flashy, manga‑inspired movesets. Its standout mechanic is the “Trade System”: after defeating an opponent, the player can permanently absorb one of their special moves, but only one can be held at a time — choosing a new one erases the previous. Defeating a character’s mirror match amplifies the absorbed ability, adding a layer of strategy to the tournament progression. With its vibrant anime presentation, transformation themes, and experimental mechanics, Gowcaizer stands as one of the more distinctive and ambitious fighters on the Neo Geo hardware. Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer was also adapted into a 3 episode OVA that released in 1996 and was directed by Masami Obari, who created the concept and character designs for both the game and OVA. An English language version would also be released in 1997 by U.S. Manga Corps.
