I had to call in to work because I was sick, I work in a deli and handle food all day so being sick while at work is a big no no, but my department manager said I was gonna get written up if I didn't show. So I went and my store manager told me I'm not allowed to be there sick, and I tried to tell him I called out and got threatened with a write up but he ignored me and sent me home....
THIS. This is one of the many reasons why we can’t call out sick. It’s bad enough that many of us are in retail because it’s all we can get, therefore it’s our only source of income. We miss any shifts, we’re screwed. What helps even less when bs like this is pulled. Does the department manager WANT to hear complaints from customers about someone sick handling their cold cuts?
Don’t make me share a story about what happens when you go in sick and how horrible it is. Because I will, it won’t be pretty, and it basically shows what happens when you have a horrible manager like that!
If your department manager says anything I’d say tell them that the store manager told you otherwise. If they have any problems take it up with the store manager. If anyone else has any similar experiences or advice how to deal with this feel free to share!
I hope you shake this cold soon and feel better! Although...is it wrong to say that if you do go in sick again (though nowhere near as bad as that) feel free to try and pass something onto the manager? Cause that’s also what he’s gonna get if he makes people come in sick anyway....
