A list of shitty managers I’ve had working retail
1) Supervisor that was dumb as shit, got the job because nobody else wanted to be an overnight manager in another city then they transferred him to our store. Was sleeping with an underage employee. He was like 22, but that’s still scummy af
2) the department manager that left the company, but got rehired when the department manager position came up. Once screamed profanity at customers and did not get reprimanded. Was sleeping with the manager above him. Homophobic. Would set stuff aside so he could buy it and resell it on ebay for a huge markup.
3) The manager #2 was sleeping with. She repeatedly passed me up for positions, gave it once to a guy that regularly showed up half an hour to an hour late to every single one of his shifts, if he didn’t call in. Probably never got a promotion because she wasn’t interested in sleeping with me.
4) Store manager that was terrified of conflict. He’d just sit in his office on his blackberry all day. If my one coworker would ever stop him to resolve a problem he would look anywhere but at her, just tell her to do whatever she wants, and then make a break for it. Did not believe in people needing stress leave. Was cheating on his wife very badly. She found out, took everything in the divorce, and he wound up marrying another woman half his age in another city like a year later
5) Department manager that joined the cult of Amway. If you’ve ever met anyone that’s drunk the Amway Kool-Aid then you know exactly what I’m talking about. I still can’t look at a corn nut without having a visceral reaction to it because one time someone made the mistake of asking him where he got ranch flavoured corn nuts and he aggressively tried to sell them to the entire store for over a year.
6) Supervisor that would get drunk and tell me every bit of gossip about the store. Like really life ruining secrets. Told me every time she used a Plan B (please, oh my god, use contraceptive, I am begging you). Was eventually fired for heavily discounting “damaged” items and selling them to her friend, who was doing the same thing to her.
7) Manager that has a huge gambling problem he doesn’t even try to hide. Every time he goes to a going away party he comes for a few minutes to say hi, maybe 1 drink, then says he’s going to spend $10 on the VLC and head home. Spends 3 hours on the VLC. Also has no human emotions as far as I know.
8) Store manager that is gay but married to a woman. Would go to “appointments” or “lunch” and disappear for hours. One of my drivers saw him once and I’ve never seen said manager disappear so fast. Apparently one of his exes was this driver’s uncle and he gave me a lot of juicy details about the affair. Everyone at both the stores knows that said manager is cheating on his wife and we’re all really confused how she doesn’t know.
9) A real brain donor. Of this entire list he may be the most frustrating one I’ve ever dealt with. His response to anything is to generally just stand there and stare at you unblinking. It’s like talking to a taxidermy dog. Actually the taxidermy would probably hold a better conversation. You have absolutely no idea if he has understood the thing that you have just told him as he will just stare at you blankly. It’s worse though if he tries to engage small talk with you because he makes everything awkward. Just imagine you’re standing in line at TIm Hortons and some guy you have never met before comes up and asks you how you feel about water floridation or do you think red is a nicer colour for a car than black. Just imagine that exact feeling, that’s what every one of his conversations is like except he’s not a stranger and you know that one day you will get cornered again and have yet another very awkward conversation.
Please, tell me your stories of terrible managers. I want to believe that this does not just happen to me.
