i hope this isn't a bother, but is it possible for systems to have no EP? specifically in traumagenic systems. we don't have any EPs (that we know of, we could just not be able to find them)
ANP - Apparently Normal Part
Hi! It’s definitely not a bother at all, we’re happy to answer any question to the best of our ability.
And our answer is… maybe? We’re not an expert on dissociative disorders, but my gut says it’s not possible to have DID without EPs, while it may be possible to be traumagenic without them.
(Image ID:) a diagram titled “Post Traumatic Stress Disorder - The Structural Dissociation of the Personality.” Type 1, PTSD (primary) involves one ANP and one EP. Type 2, OSDD/complex PTSD, borderline personality disorder, disorder of extreme stress, etc. (secondary) involves one ANP and multiple EPs. Type 3, DID (tertiary) involves multiple ANPs and multiple EPs. (End ID). Image Source
This diagram shows how parts are represented in different trauma-related disorders. Due to the nature of these disorders and how they develop, an EP is necessary to hold on to overwhelming or unwanted traumatic memories. This allows the ANPs to function normally without ever having to regularly interact with the EPs or their trauma.
Our system has DID, and we were not aware of most of our EPs until we had been in treatment for a while. We have high dissociative barriers which prevent many of us from interacting with our EPs. It may be that your system also has EPs behind dissociative barriers - in which case, it would probably be best to seek treatment from a therapist (ideally a trauma specialist) who can help you access these parts.
You also may have an EP who doesn’t realize that’s what they are. EPs don’t have to be crying, overwhelmed, and frightened all the time. They’re capable of healing, developing their characters, having goals, and looking forward to the future! If you have a headmate who struggles with their emotions and is generally unstable, there’s a chance they could actually be an EP, even if there’s not a lot of dissociation separating them from the rest of your system.
These are just our thoughts, anyway! Remember dissociative barriers can be remarkably good at hiding parts and alters from the rest of the system. So if we were you, we wouldn’t be so quick to determine that we have no EPs at all! It may just take some treatment and healing for them to come around.
Best of luck to you! Even if you learn you don’t have any EPs in your system, know that your experience is still real and you still absolutely have a place in the traumagenic community and the plural community overall!
