I was out of town this weekend and I couldn’t sleep, I couldn’t remember if I changed the font on my paper to meet specifications. If you say you don’t have random anxiety about small details, you are definitely lying.

Helvetica

I never in a million years would have even begun to imagine how much goes into creating a type face. It is utterly amazing and completely mind blowing. We started our typography lesson by attempting to recreate the letter A. I failed miserably.

We followed up with some terminology about type. Serif and sans serif...who would have thought these things were so specific?

And then we learned a bit about Helvetica and my brain practically exploded. At first I was kind of bored...but then I got home and started thinking about it.

Helvetica is EVERYWHERE. There is also a documentary about it and I strongly suggest everyone check it out. Is it the most exciting thing you're ever going to watch? No. But it gives you such insight into typography and the passion these people have for it is so cool. Its a little weird...but cool.

There's even a little mystery to Helvetica. I don't want to get all dramatic and be like "its more than a font" but it kind of is. Typography does so much more then I realized. It can convey tone and mood. During the lesson, it was connected back to MySpace. MySpace was SO big when I was in high school and what we were being taught was so true. I would spend hours after school redoing my page and using HTML to rework the font and emphasize certain things I wanted people to see on my page. The font was extremely important to me. It was making a statement.
