Hello! I would like to make a gijinka/humanization design for a bird character who has a partially missing beak & uses a beak prosthetic. I'm unsure how to best translate such a thing to a human face & am asking for advice about doing that while staying both analogous to the original character & respectful to real life disability.
Hi!
Beaks are analogous structures to human jaws and lips. Missing one half of the beak often means they need assistance eating, although some birds can learn to eat themselves after injury. They tend to need softer prepared food, but this also puts them at risk for malnutrition.
Cleft palate and micrognathia are some congenital facial differences that could be similar to a missing beak. A severe jaw injury (like breaking a jaw bone) would be the closest acquired disability. All of these are often corrected via surgery in people to improve quality of life. Another possible alternative is a facial palsy.
Birds also use their beaks kind of how humans use hands. They groom their feathers and explore things by biting them. So, you may want to consider giving your character a disability related to hand/arm function too.
