I think out of the most frustrating parts — not the worst part, just personally frustrating— of Israel being, well, what it is, is that my first instinct whenever it’s brought up can’t be that of solidarity with Palestinians. Don’t get me wrong, it’s my second instinct. But my first is self preservation, and that feels so very selfish, even if it’s entirely reasonable. Antisemites DO use reasonable criticism of the state as cover for just hating any of us. Despite being a really small percentage of the American population, we’re one of the most hate crime’d minorities.

It’s not fair, that this one settler colonialist state is different from all the rest to me. Yeah, I had relatives from there— before the creation of the modern day state. I have no loyalties to the place, other than a vague curiosity. Beating myself up over being anxious whenever it comes up is like judging a random Muslim person for being anxious at the mention of 9/11– people use bad things as an excuse to do hate crimes all the time. And it’s not like me worsting about my own safety in the privacy of my mind somehow affects anything a continent away.

Still makes me feel like I’m failing at leftism, though.
