AOT related doodles I think it's kinda a comfort series for me hmm
I'd forgotten about this and, like, it's one of the absolute cutest moments in the show???
Watching the first half of aot season two without laughing at Bertholdt's distressed face every time Reiner opens his fucking mouth is not possible, poor guy looked stressed 24/7
Madi and I are on part 2 of season 3 now, and I gotta say, with more insight into everyone, Marco's death feels less like a senseless murder and more like just a sad, rapid escalation of teenagers making terrible decisions because they're in situations they should never have to be in, which is one of AOT's most consistent tropes, right along with the thing where a character is like 'I can totally handle this situation!' only to immediately be like 'Oh no I can't handle this situation at all!'
Terrible Decision 1: Bertholdt and Reiner both having this stupid discussion on an open rooftop while a huge military operation is going on around them. It's not even just Reiner blabbing and Bertholdt being like 'this is a bad idea' like I kind of remembered, they're both just fucking saying this shit and not even trying to keep their voices down
Terrible Decision 2: Why did Marco make a point of making sure they knew he was there? They didn't even know he'd landed on that rooftop (again, because they were having a Normal Volume Conversation about their deadly world shattering secret) and he probably could have left without them realizing, too. He also made sure to carefully repeat the incriminating shit he heard them say, so that they would have zero doubt that he'd really overheard them.
Terrible Decision 3: Reiner is so panicked by this that his lame ass attempt at an explanation is 'That was just a joke' even though none of what they were saying was in any sort of recognizable joke format. Admittedly at this point it's not much of a significant decision, but it's still funny and a great indicator of how badly he knew they'd fucked up.
Can anyone blame Annie when they tell her the reason they have to kill Marco is because he overheard them and she just screams 'YOU JACKASSES??' She looked away from these dipshit boys for a few minutes and this is what they did.
Now, I'm not actually going to say that what the trio does next is one of their Terrible Decisions. I have nothing against Marco, but by all reason, they truly did not have any other viable alternatives - you may notice that neither Bertholdt nor Annie try arguing that they SHOULDN'T kill Marco. Annie is just furious that the boys have made it have to happen, and distraught that Reiner is having her take part in fixing their colossal fuck up by helping kill their friend, while Bertholdt simply sits in the background and sweats about it.
I know I've said this on here before, but Reiner's decision to kill Marco doesn't read as psychosis at all. It was a desperate choice he had to make in a matter of seconds (because of the fucking up he and Bert did) because their entire missions and their lives were in jeopardy. What the hell else were they going to do? It's tragic and fucked up and they know it is, but no one tried to say 'we don't have to kill him' because they were so ass deep in this horrible mission that they were operating on 'we can't turn back now' and dissociation.
And, going back to the thing where a character is like 'I can totally handle this situation!' only to immediately be like 'Oh no I can't handle this situation at all!,' the second Reiner's Let's Have Marco Get Eaten plan works perfectly, the reality of it isn't something he's prepared for at all.
It's incredibly stupid, but it made me think of Bob's Burgers when Gene tells the girls to burn his keyboard and when they give him the alleged ashes he goes
Same vibes.
Honestly Reiner's most questionable/dickish decision in this scene is making poor Annie help him by reminding her that she risked her life to save Connie earlier and being like 'ARE U STARTING TO LIKE THESE PEOPLE??'
I kind of wish Annie and Bertholdt had both gone 'are you FUCKING SERIOUS RIGHT NOW' and they'd all just started fighting amongst themselves and slapping each other while Marco ran away, because that would honestly be about in line with their maturity levels here.
The fact that we never got an on-screen EMA trio group hug is foul.
the introduction to the female titan in AOT is insane
I had to pause to get myself together omg
cute
OMG MY HUSBAND’S FINALLY HERE!!!!
