Week One - type (PRACTICAL)
Our first workshop commenced with the “Typeface in my pocket” activity, whereby we combined the contents of our bags and used the objects of different forms to create a type. To begin, we were tasked with creating our name out of our individual belongings, once we had tweaked and finalised our own type for our names we moved on to combining our belongings and working collaboratively to create the entire alphabet and the numbers 1-10. This activity challenged us to think about the natural forms of the objects we had in front of us, and the ways in which we could place and manoeuvre the objects to create the clearest form of type. After we were satisfied with our alphabet we had the opportunity to draw up a sketch of it, the fun task enabled us to really focus on each object and how its physical characteristics made it the best choice for its letter.
