in all seriousness though, very few, if any, professional athlete in ANY sport is going to prioritize their health and wellbeing ahead of participating in the sport. and a lot of them are already fucking their bodies up in the long-term with the harsh training even WITHOUT playing through and worsening existing injuries. and while people (me included) always argue coaches should step in, the coaches are never going to because their jobs and livelihoods are just as dependent upon the team performance these injured players contribute to. so then we just end up in this never-ending circles of athletes quite literally ruining their bodies. which usually leads to substance abuse and other mental health crises as they contend with the pain after retirement even.
