Five Favorite Original Scores of 2012
1. The Master by Jonny Greenwood
Greenwood's score serves as a character all its own in The Master, an eerie, jarring, sometimes achingly tender embodiment of the tumultuous love affair between the leader of a rising movement and the troubled veteran who follows him. Greenwood hits all the right notes here, from the melodramatic flair of 1950s cinema to the drifting memories of life at sea to the flowering strains of love to the repetitive insistence of the Master's bizarre exercises. And beyond this, Greenwood touches a strange beauty, or beautiful strangeness, that draws out colors and movements and facial expressions in miraculous synesthesia. Oh, and the score is a fantastic piece of standalone orchestral music.
