Y’all, I know I keep saying sorry for being MIA and that I’m back now, and then going MIA for like a year again. 

BUT I’M BACK NOW, haha. Don’t know if anybody cares but here’s a little update:

I’ve been working at NYU in the Leadership Initiative office (HMU if you’re interested in learning about the application processes for global fellowships and scholarships like the Fulbright and Rhodes!). It’s been a temp. job (but a great and fun one) for the summer. When the school year starts back up I’ll be teaching ELA full-time in the Upper West Side.

I’m thinking about starting an NYU ‘22 ask series to accept questions from freshmen or new students coming into NYU who are curious about certain topics like I did last year, so let me know if you’re interested!

the college application essays in the u.s. is exhausting.

you have to be assertive, but not pretentious; meticulous, but not detail-picking; a hard worker, but not a workaholic; academically-focused, but not too focused that you seem neck deep in obsession of your GPA; give to your community, but not so much that it seems fake; show your advantages, but not so much that it becomes a counting list; have some trauma, but you have to have gotten up from them. you have to write up a fairy tale heroine’s life, or that’s what it seems like.

you have to write down your aspirations, your growth, your trauma, where you’ve fallen down and where you have, or should have, gotten up. yet you haven’t even figured most of this out yet, you’re still just a kid. you don’t know what they want from you. all your highschool years you’ve been told to be perfect by these capitalized letters and black, boldened percentages on your transcript, and now colleges want to see what’s “real”. but what is the “real” they want to see? 

you have to compress barely 18 years of your life into 650 words — that’s a little over two pages with times new roman 12 point font, double margins, the perfect way they’ve told you all the way up to now. so far, I’ve written 226 words. 

it makes you wonder, how much is your life worth? not the “not dying” aspect, but the experiences. the way you noticed snow fall once when you were a child, the way you stood in the rain because you moved to a faraway country and rain makes you think of home, the way you think of countless ideas in the shower but toss them aside because “there’s no time”, the way you’re not living for these 650 words.
