I'm still trying to iron out my list of grad schools to apply for this fall...and I'm. Incredibly frustrated and feeling quite hopeless. The competition to get into any of these programs is astronomical. 1:10 odds at least, some are like 1:50. It's ridiculous. And idk that I've got what it takes to get in.
I've been out of school for 4 years. I graduated in 2022. I have very limited research experience because it was all remote and I was just developing all of my health conditions and could hardly move, let alone manage research on top of my school work. Idk how I'm supposed to compete with other applicants, especially when they're younger, smarter, and much more accomplished than me. Like. Why am I bothering? Again? Ffs this will be my third round of graduate applications 😭
I plan on casting my net a bit wider and applying to more schools than the last two times, but doing so requires that many more applications and personal statements and cold contact emails. And idk that I have it in me to get it all done and at a standard that gives me even a remote chance of getting accepted somewhere.
Hello champs! Yesterday I wrote a half-assed personal statement, but it's written!!!! I wrote something!!!!! WOO HOO! From here I'll continue to think about my personal statement and how to make it better!
TO DO:
reflect on myself as a scientist
make some edits to my personal statement!
update my LinkedIn
sort through some boxes!!
Also here are some links that I found helpful for writing my personal statement: :)))) (Some of them are specific for physics, but I think some things can be translated over to other fields)
I like this one the best:
If you’re applying to study Physics at PhD level, you may be required to submit a personal statement. Crafting an excellent personal stateme
