Got accepted to Phd of Literature

I almost chocked on my soup when i received that email. I'm shook. I rolled the dice and it's a fucking d20, it's happening!!! I'm back in the uni !!! AHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

Next up:

accept the offered study place (did that)

enroll to Uni

inform the unemployment place that i'm soon a student

inform my landlord that i will move

start looking for housing in the new city i will have to move to

start applying for tuitions and sponsorships in the academic field

Please bear in mind that I’m studying in the UK, so I am only giving you an insight what the 1+3 programme looks like here. More importantly, I can’t guarantee that this type of programme will be available/similar in other countries/universities.

PROS

🔹You get to learn a bunch of techniques and optimise conditions of your assays

🔹Get to know the lab and your teammates better

🔹The teaching aspect of the course makes it a smoother transition between being in a taught degree to full time research

🔹You get a masters degree after your first year

CONS

🔸If you already have a masters degree before starting your PhD, some of the taught content of the course will overlap with what you have previously studied and may take time away from research

🔸In the first year you are officially enrolled as a masters student, rather than a PhD researcher, which means you won’t have as much freedom and you can’t work in the lab unsupervised or work ‘out of hours’

🔸As part of the MRes year, you will need to submit at least one thesis and/or other written assignments, which creates a lot of deadlines that need to be met and that could interfere with you lab work

🦇 applying for PhD (in literature) september 2024

🦇 graduated, masters degree (literature) on july 23

🦇 learning norwegian (i should pick up a book in norwegian and attempt to read it) my lovely partner is norwegian and i want to speak his language, so far i guess i'm "survives basic conversation if talked to slowly"

🦇 learning korean (writing system so far)

🦇 likes reading and studying (for fun)

🦇other hobbies: being in nature, going to metal/punk/goth events, being tired at home

🦇 trying to find a "normal" job so i can then study in peace without money stress

Distant future studt plans:

🦇 languages i want to learn: ukrainian, old norse, church slavic, polish, german (revisiting), spanish

🦇 fields of study i'm interested in: decolonial study, literature, art history, history (medieval, iron age, non-european/western) feminism, posthumanism, philosphy, violence studies (basically "why are some people violent/do crimes and how it can be prevented")

Study plans for this evening:

read environmental history (by Väyrynen) with notes

pick a new book to read

edit the research plan (mainly word choiches, "is this all making sense and flowing from one topic to another" and so on)

i got this one fantasy novel that's kinda okay, i should likely read that for 50 pages or so, so i can get it done and returned to the library

Also some of the professors have started to reply to me c: Three declined bc of different reasons, but other 3 were interested and said they will be discussing my research plan over (eek!!) with the faculty's other people.

I was so overrun with anxiety on sunday and monday so now this turn of events feels just, weird? Apparently some of the professors were really interested in my work? And wanted to make sure to help me get back into uni to actually do that research? nice c:

💮 write the most important part "why this research matters + what i am actually doing + why is it new and interesting

🪷 choose a new reference book from Pile, start reading it too (all reading done with notes ofc)

All bow down to the Pile of Backround Material for PhD Applying ! Ft my study friend, mister Little Guy, Lord of the Mushroom Folk

As you can see, most books are from the library since I can't afford buying a lot of copies for myself.. blessed is the library and free academia.

Today's a study day. I'm gonna start working on the PhD application insanity now for good since my job apprenticeship in a café ended.

Universities i'm gonna apply to, haven't decided the order yet (Jyväskylä will be the first option tho): Jyväskylä, Oulu, Tampere, Turku and maybe Helsinki too.

I'd rather not go to Helsinki since bigger cities don't suit me that well.

Study plans:

Get the research questions/plan paper ready

Contact professors in each Uni, bc i need at least one to say "i'll be your tutor" to apply

Read a lot backround material and research done before to get more ideas of what i'm gonna do and how

Get a better wiew of philosophy, since that's causing some issues, I need to understand Hegel, Heidegger, Spinoza and others, in my sleep even, since everything in humanistics is linked

Enroll to a korean lesson online, there's a few adult educational centres that offers that, since duolingo is not working for me anymore (it has technical issues or something and i don't wanna pay for something that doesn't work) this is just for fun, i like learning languages but i'm so slow that i need a teacher to ask stupid questions from

try to calm the hell down

I'm now in the state where I have 5 rough idea-ed articles planned out, which is the amount you're gonna need if you do an article Doctorate (basically the thesis instead of being one big thing is gonna be 3-5 smaller essays, all connecting topic or theme or research method wise)

These have been the plans from today (6.8) to the end of October. I'll update as I go, neglecting studying has ended yesterday <3 academic research, my love <3 <3
