A Beautifully-Drawn Horror
Archivist Wasp by Nicole Kornher-Stace My rating: 4 of 5 stars The book was eerie, a beautifully drawn horror. It reminded me of the still-lingering dream I had once of ghost hunters, though of course it’s the fleshed out atmosphere from someone else’s brain. Nonetheless, that it could remind me of one of my own dreams speaks to Kornher-Stace's ability to thumb the subconscious and illustrate deeply human anxieties and fears. Her ghost-hunter/Archivist, Wasp, is drawn out of the bloody rituals she's been enlisted in since infancy by an unusual ghost who would have her join him on a different kind of journey, one of healing. Kornher-Stace's story prompts readers to think about ritual and history, how one might relish friendship without even having ever experienced it. Highlights: Wasp’s contribution (and almost obsessive habit) to the “Field Notes,” and how her reflection on a “specimen” as if a foreign object allowed for vivid illustration and a sense of history. The following illustration of a ghost "filling in" is clearer (and eerier) from Wasp's close-range description: “As the salt took hold of them, their faces began to resolve: first the features grew, claylike, then refining— their hair grew out, straight or curly, then darkened or lightened from that dullish silver— their eyes grew pupils, irises, and color slowly began to bleed in. Their heights and sizes began to stabilize, to calibrate against each other” (34). View all my reviews
Feeling the cringe from this creepy passage of Archivist Wasp, in which our protagonist feeds a ghost from the blood of her own thumb, because why not?
The only way out was through... I seriously loved this intensely dark and captivating little novel 👻 #archivistwasp #nicolekornherstace #catchkeep #postapocalyptic #ilovereading #yalit #yafiction #bookstagram
