'Cannibal killer' dies after being Tasered by police in homeless hostel
A woman has been murdered in an act of cannibalism and the suspect has died after police fired a Taser at him at a homeless hostel in the South Wales village of Argoed. Gwent Police fired a 50,000-volt Taser at their 34-year-old suspect - later named as Matthew Williams (pictured above) - before restraining him after being called to the hostel. He later collapsed and died at the scene where the body of a 22-year-old woman was also discovered. Police are treating her death as murder and are not looking for anyone else.
I have lived here and represented Argoed for over 30 years and this is the worst tragedy that has happened for us as a village.
Argoed county and community councillor Leon Gardiner
But while the force has refused to comment on the specifics of the incident, sources confirmed she had received substantial facial injuries. As well as the murder investigation, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) watchdog has launched its own probe following the man's death. Argoed county and community councillor Leon Gardiner said the village was still in a state of shock. He said: "This has hit the community for six." Williams is reported to be local to the area and the woman was from the nearby village of Blackwood.
Whilst under arrest, the man became unresponsive. Officers and paramedics administered first aid but he was also pronounced dead at the scene.
