Arkham smelled.
It always smelled.
Stale, medicinal chemicals, cold concrete, must. You hated it. But you don’t know why you’ve come here, at least, don’t know why you’ve bothered. You should be sending an attorney to do this…but you couldn’t help yourself. You needed to see him for yourself.
You braced yourself, squaring your shoulders back as a guard lead you down a hallway. Yellow, fluorescent lights flickered against the tile, looking more like they were out a horror movie than anything else. You swallowed your nerves down, even as a wave of nausea washed over you and lingered in your throat. You wiped your sweaty, clammy palms off on your pants and ignored the echoing screams from somewhere else in the asylum.
“In here,” the guard said, coming to a halt outside one of the visitors rooms.
You nodded, watching as he unlocked the door with a heavy set of keys. As he pushed it open, he continued, “I’ll be right outside if you need me.”
You thanked him, voice meek, but you slipped into the room. The guard shut the door behind you with a heavy thud that echoed along the walls and seemed to reverberate through the entire room. But that wasn’t what caught your attention – because what did was him.
There he sat, at a wooden table in the center of the room. Wrists and ankles bound in shackles, a chain around his waist to keep him from lunging. Half his face – the bad half – was bathed in shadows. Fitting.
“Well,” a voice said. Not Harvey. Two-Face. “Wondered how long it’d take you to show.”
“Hello, Harvey,” you murmured, before slipping into the seat across from him.
Two-Face snickered. “Not Harvey,” he hissed. “Haven’t you learned yet, bitch?”
You didn’t flinch. Not like you used to. And God, were you used to it. Used to the abuse from Two-Face, from the way he treated you, snickering at your tears…but it was always Harvey would comforted you. Harvey who wiped those same tears away. Harvey who held you in his arms and soothed your bruises and kissed you until you fell in love with him all over again. It happened more times than you could remember.
But the truth was that, a few weeks ago, you’d finally had enough.
So you’d called the GCPD and turned him in.
You’d watched from the sidelines as they hauled him out of his hideout, kicking and screaming and throwing insults at the “pigs” arresting him. But when he’d found your eyes in the crowd, it was like he knew just what you’d done.
And he would never forgive you.
Shifting in your seat, you set the folder down that you’d had tucked against you. With your fingertips, you slid it his way. “I’m here because I need you to sign these.”
He finally leaned forward. His full face bathed now in the light, revealing the burns and scars etched forever into his skin. A bulging eye that looked like it was always peering down into your soul. He sneered, baring teeth as he glanced at the folder.
“What is it?” Two-Face grumbled.
You didn’t answer. Just waited for him to grab the folder. It took him a moment before he did, finally snatching it up and flipping it open – but as soon as he did, his face fell. The anger burned into his expression melted away as if it’d been extinguished. And when he looked back up, you realized it was no longer Two-Face glaring at you.
Harvey had returned.
“…divorce papers?” he whispered. The shock in his voice was barely contained.
As if on instinct, you touched your ring finger, where the diamond he’d spent a fortune on no longer sat. Just naked, empty skin. Guilt festered in your stomach, a sensation that made you feel like you might be sick – but you’d made peace with your decision weeks ago.
“I can’t do this anymore, Harvey,” you whispered.
His eyes darted back and forth between you and the papers. Back and forth, back and forth. It was like his mind was splitting in two, and years of being by his side had taught you just what was happening: that Harvey and Two-Face were fighting for dominance, fighting to be heard and seen and take control of the situation laid before them.
“Why?” he finally whispered without looking up at you. “Why now?”
“You know why,” you said through gritted teeth. Because he’d hurt you one too many times.
“That wasn’t me!” he cried, his head snapping up to look at you. “It was him. It’s always him – you know I would never hurt you. I love you. You’re…” he trailed off his words.
Tears blurred your vision as shadows crept in at the edges of the room, like demons. Old wounds threatened to reopen, even though you’d spent years closing them. God, you hated doing this to him – but you couldn’t take it anymore.
“Please,” you pleaded. “Just sign the papers.”
He studied you carefully, eyes reading your expression – but his posture suddenly slacked as he leaned back against the chair, lips curling into a wicked smile.
Harvey was gone again.
“Please,” Two-Face snickered. “You and I both know you could never leave us.”
“Well, I am,” you said, but the words sounded so stupid. Like you were a child stomping your feet and arguing your point to a parent who didn’t care.
He laughed, something gruff and foreign that made your skin crawl. The kind of laugh you’d come to know so well, full of evil and disregard for anything that didn’t benefit him. His eyes never left yours as he reached into his jumpsuit pocket – and pulled out the coin.
It glinted in the light, scarred side rough and shiny.
You hated that fucking coin.
“Tell you what, love,” he said, roughly. “Heads or Tails. Heads, we sign the papers. We get a divorce and you can live your sorry life without us. But tails?” He flipped the coin between his fingers like a master magician. “Tails, we get to keep you.”
The blood in your veins turned to ice. You wanted to protest, wanted to deny him this – but you knew how he worked. You knew he would only listen to the coin.
And maybe, there was some deep, dark part of you that loved it, too.
“Fine,” you said, relenting.
And then Two-Face flipped the coin.
