What it means to serve in the Russian army?

November 15 is Conscript Day in Russia. Everyone who serves under the draft should be ready to "paint the grass" before the commander arrives.

The main goal of army life is to raise fighters who rush fearlessly into battle without a shred of doubt. It is believed that future soldiers must unlearn how to think. Therefore, they are programmed to follow orders instantly, no matter how crazy they may seem. Otherwise, the brain and the instinct for self-preservation will kick in, and the war will be lost.

Some army orders are indeed insane and stupid, but are nonetheless part of any enlisted man's routine.

Dig a trench - from here up to lunch.

Without a break. The expression doing something "from here until lunch" applies to many aspects of military life: running, working, cleaning, firing drills, etc. It means doing it until your body aches. But what an outlet for energy!

Rise of the Company, Retreat of the Company.

This is an Army exercise that trains the unit to quickly dress and undress at the alarm.

The entire unit is trained to get dressed and run out of the barracks in a timely fashion.

The drill begins in bed under a blanket, and on the order "Company up!"

Everyone jumps out of their bunk and runs to put on their uniforms.

In summer the task is given fifty seconds to complete, in winter it is a minute and fifty.

If someone is not in time, the commander shouts "Company out!" and everyone runs back, undresses and climbs into bed. And it can go on and on until everyone has completed the task in the allotted time. Or until dinner arrives.

Burying the cigarette butt.

In the army, you can only smoke with permission and in the presence of a superior. And if anyone is seen with a cigarette in the smoking room (or anywhere else) during duty hours, you will be sent to "bury the butt."

This means that you have to take a shovel and go to the woods outside the unit. There you will have to sweat for a few hours, digging a full-fledged grave. After that you have to put the butt on the bottom, say the funeral speech and then cover it with earth.

But that's not all. The cherry on the cake is the extra dirty work duties for the week.

If your sewing skills are not up to par or the commander doesn't like your work, he will tear off the hem until you sew it properly. You will also have to sew name tags on your clothing and sew up torn pockets in pants and jackets because you are only issued one set of Army clothing for your entire deployment.
