A composition from Ólafur Arnalds' latest album "re:member".
Been listening to Ólafur Arnalds’ latest album “re:member” (2018).
I discovered this composer when he scored the TV series “Broadchurch”.
Like the other Icelandic composers Hildur Guðnadóttir, who scored “Chernobyl” and won the Oscar for best score this year, and Jóhann Jóhannsson, who died suddenly in 2018, he mixes traditional instruments - he plays several instruments himself - with electronic (and even ambient) sounds.
I sometimes wonder whether Iceland’s nature - a sparsely populated volcanic island with geysers - inspires these composers but one thing is for sure: these boys create atmosphere like nobody else!
And on this album, Arnalds uses his custom-developed Stratus system two years in the making: as he plays a central piano, two software-driven pianos produce two different notes which leads to unexpected harmonies.
I kid you not!

The Icelandic composer is joined by two "ghost" pianists, making mysterious and memorable music at the Tiny Desk.
