Milestone- ICON

To kick off my Black History Month doodles, no better place to start than Milestone. Though they never got to be in the DCAU I think I did alright with the adapting Icon and Rocket to the style.

Icon/Arnus (Alien Name) or Augustus Freeman IV (Human Name) is an alien from Terminus, the Cooperative who in the 1800s landed in a cotton field in the American South and became enslaved, years later he appeared under his human alias and the appearance of a black man who secretly had superpowers, when his house was broken into he used his powers and a person named Raquel Ervin who was a witness of the home invasion convinced Augustus to become Icon, with her becoming his sidekick Rocket, a native to the Dakotaverse before being in the main DC Universe, he has teamed up with the Justice League and is noted as being like Superman in terms of power

General Garza is Done with This

There’s a lot to unpack here.

On the one hand, Garza is in the wrong. First, she is lying. (Though not under oath, technically.) Second - The Republic is a democracy. The military should - ultimately - answer to the elected representatives of the people. Third - It can easily be interpreted that she is covering up here to cover her own ass, not out of a sense of a greater good.

On the other hand, there needs to be a separation between government and the military. We see on Voss in the very same Trooper story the terrible consequences of giving the Senate - and specifically individually Senators - direct command over military forces. Taken to its extreme, you’d have a hundred Senators or military leaders each with their own private armies, vying for supremacy. (This is part of what doomed the Roman Empire.) Its when Churchill said - at the height of the second World War - “the duty of the House of Commons is to sustain the Government or to change the Government, if it cannot change it, it should sustain it. There is no working middle course in war-time.” (Yes, I know Churchill was an antiquated asshole about a LOT of things. Let me talk here.)

Garza has a point that nothing Arnus or the Senate would do at that point could improve the situation. No one is going to say “Oh -  We screwed up that thing on Ando Prime. We should learn something from that!” No. They will say “We can’t trust our own military! We should micro-manage them MORE!” or “We should cut their budget!” or “We should surrender to the Sith!” (Possibly all three.) So hanging up on him sells the fact that Garza is a lying, self-serving bitch. It also sells the fact that occasionally, such people are in the right.

I did an animated style redesign of the character Icon from Milestone Media in June and I wanted to repost it with notes . Also wanted to point out and see how many people watched “Black Panther”; I included in Icon’s redesign the Adrinka symbol for “Perseverance”. If you look closely at it and can remember, Shuri wore a shirt with this symbol on it 🙂. This character should have either had an animated/ live action series, or a big screen theatrical movie by now and although I don’t know all the rights and particulars, I feel this character’s time to shine is now- he’s needed. It’s sad to think that I may not see this or other versions of super powered POC before I leave this plane of existence- but I hope I do. This character and others of ethnic origin created are in need of being seen, not shelved. Yet they are because they’ll always be compared to a white super powered character.

Superman. It’s true.

Those who know me know I love Superman- but I also love Icon just as much. The concept of this character is just as solid as Superman and while Superman represents Truth, Justice, and at one time, The American Way, I see Icon as a symbol of Perseverance, Virtue, and Universal Inclusion of All. Again, I don’t know the particulars or the rights to him, but wouldn’t you want to see a character like this?!!? Warner Brothers- you’re truly missing out by not doing anything for this character.
