I know the debate died down a while ago, yet I still constantly hear the rhetoric that aros are inherently un-queer and non-lgbt.

Yes, it is slightly different from the other queer identities due to the lack of attraction that is integral to the identity. Nonetheless, I will defend aros with all my might.

Just because it is “different” doesn’t mean it doesn’t belong in the community. Yes, it may be different because of the lack of attraction inherent to the identity and the disconnect from sexuality. And, that doesn’t matter. Not one bit. It diverges from the heteronormative and amatonormative.

I’ve seen people try and justify its exclusion by stating it is not discriminated against. They’re wrong. They couldn’t be any more wrong.

It faces discrimination like many other queer identities, but in different ways. It faces aphobia and prejudice, amatonormativity, and ignorance.

But that is beside the point, discrimination shouldn’t qualify you for queerness, your queerness does. Thus, aromanticism is a queer identity.

To further clarify, I define the word ‘queer’ as an identity that diverges from the normalities in today’s society surrounding gender and sexuality. And I’d be dense if I said that didn’t include aromanticism!

I'm an asexual aromantic, I don't experience sexual or romantic attraction towards the same sex or the opposite sex.

I don't have an interest or desire to have sexual intimacy with the same sex or opposite sex.

I don't have any desire or interest to have a romantic relationship with the same sex or opposite sex.

So, "HOW AM I BASICALLY STRAIGHT?"

* I identify as queer because i am not gay, lesbian, pansexual or bisexual so the queer label personally works for me. The A in LGBTQIA+ means Aromantic, Agender & Asexual btw.

Let me say it again:

Aro people of ANY circumstance are valid in their identities. No ifs, ands, or buts.

You’re valid. Yes, that applies to a-spec and aro-spec people, bi people (seriously, how are you guys STILL facing erasure and gate-keeping?!?!), trans people, pan people, anyone with a non-standard gender identity, gays/lesbians, anyone in the process of still figuring it out or coming out. You’re super valid and loved. :)

If sexuality/romanticism was like the type of pizza you like cheese could boys pepperoni could be girls. Mushroom, bacon, peppers, etc. Could be nonbinary genders. If you're straight or gay you like either cheese or pepperoni. (Nblnb could be considered straight if they want so they'ed like only 1 topping not cheese or pepperoni.) If you're bi you like any two or more toppings. If you're pan you like any toppings. Any other multisexual/romantic people like different toppings of varying numbers. If your asexual/romantic you just don't like pizza at all no matter the toppings. Demi is like you only like pizza (toppings vary from person to person) from a specific place or made by a specific person only. Grayace/aro is like you don't eat pizza but one time you had the best pizza ever and it's the only pizza you've ever liked (toppings vary from person to person.) And like to separate sexuality and romanticism sexual attraction is triangle pieces and romantic attraction is square pieces. Because your sexuality and romanticism can be different. So if you're asked what type of pizza you like you can say I dont like any pizza and that's a valid pizza prefferance. Likewise if someone asks you your sexuality/romanticism saying you're asexual/aromantic is a valid sexuality/romanticism. Not liking any pizza is valid and not liking any genders sexualy, romantically, or both is also valid. Another example is atheism. Atheism is the lack of religion just like ace and aro are the lack of attractions. So if someone asks you your religion saying you're atheist is a valid response. You lack a religion like you could lack attraction. Same with agender, if you're asked your gender saying I'm agender/I dont have a gender is an acceptable valid response. Maybe those examples cleared some things up about asexuality and aromanticism.

I’ve recently accepted myself as partnering aro. I’ve got myself a girlfriend whom I love very deeply. I thought I was straight up aromantic, but now I see I’m demi/grey romantic and I feel levels of romantic attraction to certain people and I crave relationships with them. My girlfriend herself is also aro. And yes, we are romantically invested yet there are some romantic cliches and other romantic things that we do not participate in. And it is a perfect relationship with someone I care deeply for.

So what I want to say is that partnering aros are completely valid and are no less valid than any other type of aro.
