Hey so, can we talk about how absolutely horrific it is that AO3, one of the biggest writing platforms on the internet, got fucking scraped for datasets that go towards training AI?

Up to 12.6 million fanworks were contained in the dataset. DMCAs have been filed against Hugging Face, the platform storing the dataset, to prevent further usage of their users’ works. Although the dataset is no longer accessible, I’m floored at the amount of creatives who were stolen from.

One writer, Dean (dicklessthewonderclown on AO3), shared that 42 out of 48 of his works were scraped. He also covered the situation on TikTok, including a summary of what happened, who was affected by the scrape, and how to figure out if you were affected as well.

AO3 wasn’t the only creative platform that’s been hit with such a massive scrape, either; PaperDemon, Character Hub, Artfol, Artgram, Paintberri, and Itaku were affected as well.

Bogus Red, the owner of PaperDemon.com, has updates on the situation. The most recent of which can be watched on PaperDemon’s TikTok page. Updates can also be found on the PaperDemon website.

Idk how many people here use paperdemon, but if you've ever posted on there or AO3, then your work has likely been scraped for AI.

These datasets are intended to be used to train AI models. PaperDemon and the other art sites listed above did not authorize the publishing of the content."

"We've filed a DMCA takedown request for both the PaperDemon art dataset and PaperDemon writing dataset. As of this document's publishing at Apr 18, 2025 12:10pm, the writing repo is temporarily frozen but the art repo is still public.

Nyuuzyou has not agreed with our request to take down the entire repo. At this time, nyuuzyou is only complying with taking down art from the person who owns the copyright. That means each of you will need to request a takedown. Nyuuzyou requires that you provide a list of links to the artwork/writing before they will comply with the takedown." end ID.]

in the article here, there's more information including info on how to request to take down work from huggingface as well as the other websites mentioned. to paraphrase a member from the discord, however, be wary when visiting the huggingface website or downloading content from it as it hasnt been vetted for viruses/malware/trojan/etc. i have not personally visited myself as i dont use these websites (minus ao3 which im inactive on) but take precaution when doing so.

this is a continually updating story so feel free to add on with more info/updates. i havent seen anyone post about this outside of the paperdemon discord, so i thought id make the information more well known outside of that circle. this also isnt meant to fear monger by any means.

people keep decrying the loss of the old DeviantART community but won't DO anything about it

there are many alternative art sites that don't allow AI but YOU have to create that community

YOU have to post there and comment there and do whatever people did on the old DeviantART

it's not going to just spawn into existence overnight

it's on YOU to stop just complaining and actually DO something

I used to think Artfol is promising and at one point it was! I used to post on it regularly and even had artist friends there. But nowadays it's so weird and laggy and ugh...straight up does not load properly. It's a damn shame cuz I really liked it.
