Three Lucanises

Holy crap this was a lot of work 🤣😭. Please click on the images to embiggen -- the bottom two especially lose a lot in the smaller format.

You may remember me posting the base sketch for WIP Wednesday a few weeks ago. My goal was to use the sketch to explore different painting styles. If you want to read more about that, it’s below the cut.

These are the three styles I wanted to try, based on some of my favorite tumblr artists (whom I am too embarrassed to tag, but you probably follow them).

a loose style with simple shading and minimal blending, that leaves the sketch visible

a style that resembles oil paint or acrylic, without line art

a style that emphasizes line art and uses no blending — I ended up also using this for @artworkout2026 ‘s “analogous color palette” challenge

I did the paintings in the order listed above, but they're displayed in a different order:

Top -- #2 oil painting

Left bottom -- #3 line art + analogous colors

Right bottom -- #1 sketch + simple(r) shading

My favorite PROCESS was #1, but my favorite RESULT was number #2. They were very different procedurally (different workflow, different brushes, etc.), so I don’t know what that means for me going forward. I want to try to use elements of each but it’ll take quite a bit of playing around.

My LEAST favorite process was doing neat line art (#3). However I enjoyed using minimal colors and not blending. That process really helps focus the eye on color values, and I found I learned a lot about how to sculpt shapes.

Also, speaking of eyes, mine are completely fried from staring at a Spite-fuchsia screen for hours on end. Lesson learned, take more breaks (history suggests I will not listen to this advice but I’ll try).

A big thank you to @nineblackgoatsart for their suggestions via DM. I mentioned I was trying to learn and they were so kind and helpful and gave me some great tips (zoom out/stop zooming in so much, take breaks, screenshot the wip and send to your phone for a quick overview).

Next on the docket for me? Painting my standing Lucanis sketch, probably. Wish me luck!

So here is Elgara Lavellan in the famous bathtub scream scene from Satoshi Kon's Perfect Blue! Elgara is a recently restored Tranquil, so she's kinda going through a lot.

Everything but People

Monthly Challenge: Thats it! No people! Yes, we all love drawing OC's and our blorbos and all that - but this is supposed to be a challenge after all so I couldn't make it toooooo much just la la fun times. So try just not drawing people. Draw a chair. Do a still life. Sketch a picture of that cup of coffee next to you. Since this one is a little different and more themed than the others the weekly prompts are going to be very loose with some extra options.

Weekly Challenges:

Week 1 - Still life. Optional Challenge: Draw your blorbos favorite object.

Week 2 - Animals (fantasy animals included!)

Week 3 - Buildings or scenery. Optional Challenge: Draw your blorbos favorite location.

Week 4 - Draw a picture of your favorite thing you can find in your house right now.
